In 1970s Baltimore, we meet 14-year-old Mary Jane, who has just landed her first summer job as a nanny for the daughter of a doctor and his wife in the neighbourhood. Little does her mother know that the house is a mess, the doctor is actually a psychiatrist, and soon after Mary Jane starts work, a rock star and his movie star wife move in. Over the course of the summer, Mary Jane is exposed to a family and liberal lifestyle vastly different from her own as she practices being a grown-up in a house that doesn’t always have one.
I really loved this coming-of-age story! I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of humour in the book, and it was fun to view the world through Mary Jane’s eyes. I enjoyed the juxtaposition of Mary Jane’s traditional family life versus that of the progressive family she’s working with for the summer. It was interesting to watch Mary Jane learn more about herself and the world by taking on an adult role in the doctor’s house, but with the naïveté of a 14-year-old. I was also happy with how the author wrapped up the ending in a way that felt realistic and positive.
A really great read! Slow but funny, hopeful and nostalgic.

This was such a fun and wonderful read. Very character driven. The audiobook was PERFECT and the surprise recorded song at the end was actually very catchy and cute.
