Following a book like THUG is hard but Angie Thomas did it! There were some really strong scenes, I loved all of Bri's lyrics and the last 100 pages or so were SO GOOD!
Okay guys so I finished On The Come Up by Angie Thomas last weekend and guys it was incredible. How Angie is able to write intense topics that black people face with discrimination, racial profiling, growing up in a rough neighbourhood, gang violence, addiction, police brutality, and difficult childhood is amazing, inspiring, and eye opening. It opens a door to discuss this issues to those who don’t understand or haven’t dealt with these issues.
I loved the plot, the rapping and the characters especially Bri. She is a focus to be reckoned with. What I love about her was her determination and ambition to provide a better life for her family since her fathers death when she was young and help her mother Jay who is struggle to find a job because of her past addiction. I also loved Bri’s geek culture references and unique sweaters choices.
It was beautiful to see Bri’s growth throughout the book with her family, friends and mainly herself. With coming to terms with who she is and who she wants to be as well as learning the consequences on ones actions are.
How the rapping was written and constructed in some of the chapters was amazing!! The lyrics were passionate and raw, I wish the book came with a soundtrack to listen along to!!
Angie Thomas is such a writing genius, I can’t wait to see what she writes next

The pacing of this story felt off and the story seemed to be missing focus. It was weird to have the story set in the same neighborhood THUG is with so little mention of the THUG events. I think Bri was fairly realistic. Most of the conflicts were Bri not being honest, which got old fast and made her annoying. At some point it stopped driving the story forward too. I’d give Thomas another try because THUG was so well done, but I’m disappointed in this book.
Well if Angie Thomas writes it, I will be ordering it. I love her flow, her character development, the dialogue. I loved it all and I can’t wait for her next book coming out January 2021!

OMG THAT COVER.. OF COURSE THIS WOULD BE AMAZING!
Angie Thomas did it again.
I knew this book would be great but wow. I couldn't put this book down. Honestly in the beginning I had a hard time connecting with the main character but when the action started, I loved her. This book really got me smiling and screaming at a book. I can't even wait for the movie, I know it will be amazing. I loved the references and don't get me started on the rap lyrics. It felt clean if that makes sense. The ending was great and everything pieced together even though the characters still had issues, the ending still did justice to the problems. I LOVE THIS BOOK AND WILL ALWAYS BE IN LOVE BRI AND HER STORY! (sorry for screaming).
Why I gave this book five stars...
1. Angie Thomas writing
2. characters
3. the struggles Bri went through
4. the funny moments
5. The little cute romance
I AM SO HYPED FOR THE MOVIE!
Throughout the book I imagined a full cast list. (Hire me)
