Angie Thomas

4.3 AVERAGE

Angie Thomas has done it again! After reading THUG I put this straight on my TBR. Now I’ve finished this masterpiece, I have Concrete Rose on pre order!

An absolute inspiration of a story is an understatement, we visit a number of topics through Brianna’s story: socio economic disadvantage, racism, segregation, addiction... to name a few! All Brianna wants to do is rap like her Dad who died before his time, but her problems at home are stretching further than her family can handle so this dream has turned desperate. An incident at school sparks Bri’s anger at the contradictions surrounding her and she begins a rather rocky journey into the spotlight.

Just like THUG, I’d read this again in a heartbeat. Thomas is excellent at physically pulling her reader onto the page and into her world. Visualising every scene, every emotion, every detail! Just brilliant ... and so important. A big huge massive five stars from me

4.5

Angie Thomas does an amazing job with high school student drama. This book has all the emotional punch that high schoolers love, and still feels relevant to all ages.

A 3.5 from me... it's a good story but I'm a character-driven reader and well, let's put it that way: if Thomas' Starr Carter would have been my best friend at school, Bri Jackson would have been the girl I'd never talk to ... I just thought she was very unlikable but maybe that's supposed to be part of the books genius? It's a good book but I liked "The Hate U Give" better.

I preferred this novel to The hate u give. The protagonist in On the come up was funnier and more lovable than in Angie Thomas's other book. (Star was to indecisive.) Whereas in the previous book I thought the middle of the novel was stagnant, the roller-coster that Bri took us on never once stopped.
I loved that Bri had her own aspiration, and the rapping aspect was EVERYTHING. This book made me yell and laugh. A definite 5 star read.

4.5 Stars

This book has got to be one of the most real, raw, heartwarming and heartbreaking books that I have read. I LOVED it! Again, Angie Thomas just does an amazing job writing about black youth. I don't think I've ever been able to relate so much to YA female characters as I have with Starr and Bri. I listened to this on audiobook and the narrator was PERFECTION. I loved hearing Bri's raps and thought process that she has when she creates her freestyles or songs. One thing that I didn't like was Bri's stubbornness. At times I just wish she would have listened to the people that cared for her but I also understand her dedication and desperation in the moment that caused her not to. Overall I loved this so much and I can't wait for Angie Thomas' next release!
