I knew I was going to like this, I didn't know I was going to love it as much as I do. Highly recommend.

I don't even know where to begin. 10/10 would absolutely RECOMMEND!!
I loved her first book was amazing and then this follow up has literally knocked it out of the park. Contention was there but it was good. The number of lines I could quote!!
"All these flavours out here and you choose to be salty?"
"...I guess it's easy to say you love JESUS and harder to act like HIM."
She absolutely went in with the writing. So many beautiful things to say. The flow was good, the writing wasn't mundane or monotonous or even trivial.
I cannot wait to read more of what she has to say.

Don't go into this thinking it's the Hate U Give. It isn't. It's a completely separate, beautiful story all on it's own. I loved the characters, the plot, while I didn't connect with it quite as much, was still amazing and once the story really kicked off, had me on the edge of my seat. It was a great story of finding yourself, knowing who you are and putting family first.
The main plot is nothing to write home about (), but once again I am in awe of how Angie Thomas is able to portray the complexities of familial relationships, particularly the relationships between teenagers and their parents.
Spoiler
girl wants to be a famous rapper; girl has initial breakout success; girl meets industry people who drive a wedge between her and her family/friends; the industry people make the girl do things she's uncomfortable with; girl decides to ditch the industry people and stay true to herself and her artistic vision; girl likely achieves renown and acclaim.
After 2 of Angie Thomas' books, I'm definitely a fan! Someone asked me recently if I liked this one more/less than The Hate U Give and my initial reaction was less, but I think the ending of this book redeemed it and now I may even like it more than The Hate U Give... The concept is super unique and I was engaged til the very end. I found Bri to be a bit frustrating and short-sighted/immature at times, but I think it's definitely an accurate representation of how any 16-year-old might handle things so I can't be mad. Overall I enjoyed the book and LOVED Bahni Turpin's narration as usual! (she makes the rapping not cheesy and awkward like most audiobook narrators would)
I wish we could’ve had that relationship sooner... :) cute as fuck<3 I haven’t even read The Hate You Give, but I heard about this book from Kat (paperbackdreams) and I was addicted, I read it in three days or something... awesome and good representation of all things. 🔥
