Another awesome book by Thomas. This book is important in that it gives African American Youth a book that is for them. This book isn’t trying to be anything else, and it was a pleasure to read about Bri and her beautiful family. I think THUG was a book that everyone needed/needs to read, but I think this one is for those kids who get tired of there never being any books about them on the shelves at school. If you can’t read this book and acknowledge that it’s not for you.... you shouldn’t read or review it. Especially if it clouds your ability to review it sans bias. Angie keep writing these books, keep giving these characters and their families to today’s youth. These stories are important and you are one hell of a storyteller. 5/5
This is a 4.5 because as much as I didn’t think I’d like this book, I devoured it and loved every minute! I agree with some of the commentary that I didn’t find Bri to be the most lovable character, but I liked that she was imperfect and made mistakes. I really like the writing style and the pacing of the novel as a whole. Definitely recommended!

On the Come Up is a fantastic novel, where Bri has her work cut out for her. Life can be a battle in more than one way, and I loved how quick she was to come up with rhymes for her rap when needed.
Another Angie Thomas book I'll use with my students for sure!

4.5/5 stars. Important and current themes, likable characters, and a whole lot of delightful pop culture references.
Bri is a teenage girl with the hopes to make it big with a rap career. You follow the story of her come up with her first song that may not have portrayed her in the best light despite that not being the meaning of her song.
Going through family, friendship, and school drama, not knowing if the electricity or heat would be on, or if there was going to be enough food on the table, Bri thinks that making it big is going to be the only way to help out at home. While doing this, she starts to lose herself by getting too wrapped up in playing an image for her new manager Supreme.
In the end, she finds herself again.
Overall, I think this was an amazing book and I do hope that it is made into a movie. It would be an eye opener for many people and I hope that it would create a conversation about what is happening to our youth.

Bahni Turpin’s narration makes this a 10 star book! I hope we hear more out of Garden Heights! Current and relevant and real. But with laugh out loud family life moments. Lots of feels...
