This is the first time I’ve ever finished this whole series, I usually stop part way through the third book, but I’m glad I finally have a conclusion. Overall, I think the world Paolini created and the story are really fun and compelling. The first book is definitely pulling heavily from Lord of the Rings, but he was also around 16 when he wrote it. I’m impressed with how the story developed from there and the growth Paolini had as a writer. I was surprised how quickly the climax of the entire series was resolved and the aftermath felt rushed, especially considering all the times in this series the pacing felt like it was dragging. Definitely a very fun read and I can see myself potentially reading again!
The final book in the [b:Inheritance|7664041|Inheritance (Inheritance, #4)|Christopher Paolini|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1333577900s/7664041.jpg|10260587] series was worth the wait. It's quite an undertaking at 850 pages. And for nearly the entire book, the characters are waging war. So, very intense.
We got a few things we had long waited for, including coming face to face with Galbatorix. I liked that he teased us at first, only giving us peeks here and there.
There were a few unexpected twists as well, which I won't go into, so as not to spoil anyone. Suffice to say the tension was high for most of the story, leading to many late nights where I couldn't put down the book!

My reread of the series is now COMPLETE! I forgot how sad the ending made me the first time I read it as a teenager. I'm glad I have Murtagh to look forward to - I'm not surprised it out me in a bookslump back then.
IT WAS ABOUT TIME FOR AN EGG TO HATCH FOR ARYA
I really enjoyed the book, however I did feel like there was a lack of ending. I had hoped for more, even a short epilogue would have been nice.

That was the ending? Seriously? I am soooo disappointed.
I must say, I'm very disappointed with the ending to this series.
Eragon was not the hero I hoped he would be. There was some major character development lacking and he never reached that pinnacle of awesomeness of a good hero. He never became that person that I could truly believe would be able to take down the big, bad Gallbatorix.
Overall, the plot was all over the place, inlcuding poorly written tangential action scenes and unnecessary background information. I think it got to a point where Paolini had woven too complex of a web and didn't quite know how to solve some of the problems he created. I found myself often responding to what I was reading with, "Not bloody likely." Even for a fantasy novel, I found the storyline to be very unrealistic and unimaginative. If Eragon is in a bind, he magically finds this well of power in himself and overcomes all obstacles. Yeah right.
Also, I was very confused about my feelings for Murtagh. Is he a villain, is he a good guy? At times he was painted as a pawn of Gallbatorix that hated his situation in life, and at other times he seemed to relish in his own wickedness. I would have been happy to either hate or love him throughout the series. But please be consistent. When, again, Murtagh shows the slightest bit of human compassion and, dare I say, growth, I find myself groaning. Again, "Are you kidding me? This would never happen."
I may have just had high expectations for this end to the series because it was drawn out so much throughout four books but I feel that Paolini actually devolved as a writer. As others have described, the book was simultaneously too long and too short. Unnecessary background and fluff made the book seem sooooooo long while the cursory glance through action scenes and what seemed to be key plot elements made the book seem rushed. At the same time, people don't just want gore for gore's sake. it has to mean something and here, it just didn't.
tl;dr I was very disappointed.
