I must say, I'm very disappointed with the ending to this series.
Eragon was not the hero I hoped he would be. There was some major character development lacking and he never reached that pinnacle of awesomeness of a good hero. He never became that person that I could truly believe would be able to take down the big, bad Gallbatorix.
Overall, the plot was all over the place, inlcuding poorly written tangential action scenes and unnecessary background information. I think it got to a point where Paolini had woven too complex of a web and didn't quite know how to solve some of the problems he created. I found myself often responding to what I was reading with, "Not bloody likely." Even for a fantasy novel, I found the storyline to be very unrealistic and unimaginative. If Eragon is in a bind, he magically finds this well of power in himself and overcomes all obstacles. Yeah right.

Also, I was very confused about my feelings for Murtagh. Is he a villain, is he a good guy? At times he was painted as a pawn of Gallbatorix that hated his situation in life, and at other times he seemed to relish in his own wickedness. I would have been happy to either hate or love him throughout the series. But please be consistent. When, again, Murtagh shows the slightest bit of human compassion and, dare I say, growth, I find myself groaning. Again, "Are you kidding me? This would never happen."

I may have just had high expectations for this end to the series because it was drawn out so much throughout four books but I feel that Paolini actually devolved as a writer. As others have described, the book was simultaneously too long and too short. Unnecessary background and fluff made the book seem sooooooo long while the cursory glance through action scenes and what seemed to be key plot elements made the book seem rushed. At the same time, people don't just want gore for gore's sake. it has to mean something and here, it just didn't.
tl;dr I was very disappointed.

Trite and disappointing.

I found this book was like books 2 and 3. Overly verbose with too much detail. If you take a sharpie and cross out many of the words and/or chapters I would give it a higher rating despite the fact it is cliche and the ending was mediocre at best. I am not against long books in themselves, only long books where I yawn and skip pages because they are so tedious. If his writing was better, it might not be a problem.

I went into the book with low expectations after only liking book 1... and I could tell this was a long read again. I thought this book moved more quickly than 2 and 3, but you hit the big climax of the story with about 200 pages to go. The last 200 pages just made me cringe.

Also... the big reveals of the books seem very adolescent. I feel like a elementary school aged kid may have given him the idea.
Heart of hearts? Word of words? Really?

This is one of the longest and worst books I have ever read. Unfortunately I can say the same about books 2 and 3 as well.

Paolini did a decent job of wrapping up the series. I thought the outcomes were somewhat predictable (i.e. Islanzadi's death and Arya's succession)but I was still engrossed with the story. I would have liked more explanation for Murtagh and Nasuada's relationship as I never was quite certain why he loved her. I'm satisfied with Eragon's need to leave Alagaesia, however I disagree that it has to be forever and he can never come back. I feel that a lot of storytellers rely on the main character simply leaving and that will solve all the problems but I never quite understand why their presence must be permanently lost from the land. If anything, in this case, he should still be around. Overall however, I enjoyed this conclusion, especially with Eragon and Saphira discovering that the world was round! Their battle through the storm was quite riveting and I'm glad that Paolini included that tale.

I read the first book of this series shortly after it first came out in 2002. I enjoyed the series for the most part, but with this book, I am really just glad its over. I have never turned a book away nor left a series unfinished, and I am pleased to say that I did read it. However, I probably wouldn't have done so if I weren't allowed to have my audio book at work. Normally I don't like to listen to audiobooks (except for Harry Potter, Jim Dale is amahzing!) but I just did not have the time or patience to read Inheritance myself. It was too drawn out and there were so many plot twists to keep track of over the series that I am sure I forgot more than I remembered. Even in audio book format it seemed to go on forever. There were many parallels to other fantasy series - primarily the Lord of the Rings, that I could not get past. Or other events that seemed to come from nowhere. I did enjoy the first book, but I don't understand how it turned into a four-part series of books that are nearly a thousand pages each. So many words seemed empty and I couldn't concentrate on the story line. It was an interesting and enjoyable story, but it could have been much more concise and should have been published about 6 years ago to make reading the whole series enjoyable. Also, don't listen to the audio book if you do plan on reading it. The voices of the dragons are appalling. I wanted to cover my ears everytime I heard it, only to realize that that pushed my earbuds further into my ears! So basically, if you want to read the whole series, go for it. It was fun and interesting, but probably won't hold the attention span of anyone aged...ever. It is very drawn out so definitely plan on some in-between books.

The series all together is amazing. This book is best. But in the end just ghe saddest thing.
