A perfectly matched sequel. If possible, it may be even more of a whirlwind of wealth than the original. I've missed guilty pleasures like The OC and Gossip Girl (both, in fact, referenced in this book), and this fills that hole in my heart. Also, the footnotes are gold.
lighthearted
fast-paced
While still outrageously extravagant, China Rich Girlfriend isn't as cohesive and as strong as the first book. The plot was all over the place and was stretched so thin it became insubstantial. The new characters weren't as memorable as those from Crazy Rich Asians (this is just me missing the gossipy Oliver and the best gal pal Peik Lin) and the events were more absurd than sensible (but then again, this is Kevin Kwan's world of insanely rich people; what is sensible?) Even the satire wasn't as potent and felt simply ridiculous, accompanied with laughable dialogue which mostly consisted of chronic name- and brand-dropping.
However, no matter how disorderly it was written, I enjoyed Kitty Pong's attempt to conquer the Hong Kong elite society with the help of Corinna Ko-Tung. And of course, I also enjoyed the Astrid and Charlie's will-they-or-will-they-not, In-The-Mood-For-Love-esque affair with each other.
That denouement, though, was such a satisfying wrap for a rather lackluster installment. At least, we were given that.

4.5🌟
