I remember being very creeped out by the movie version of this book when I was a kid, but realized I couldn't remember what actually happened, so I finally fixed that. It was still very creepy and heavy with some wild twists and remarkably likeable and unlikable characters. It does a great job of never letting you feel comfortable.

I did not find this romantic at all (idk why it was advertised as such) but aside from that excellent prose and an interesting introduction to gothic horror (imo).

Was not a fan of the MC or Maxim,
I found him borderline abusive, manipulative, and very sexist; plus the MC’s nativity and willingness to quickly forgive didn’t help

The twists and plot devices were more concentrated towards the end, pacing was odd at times. Because she’s get into so much detail and inner voice that it drowned out other devices (imo).

Would read for prose

I was on the fence about whether to give this a three or a four. The main character/narrator was so irritating in her innocent shyness. How could she possibly take that much for so long without fighting back even a little? However, the story was a really good story which kept my interest and made me want to pick up the book, so four it is!
