Anger. So much anger reading this book. Just makes you want to go into and unleash all the frustration and hurt the words are making you feel.

The book is sent during and after slavery, so we're dealing with a lot of sensitive topics like racism, rape, abuse, murder, lynching, war, body mutilation, and shitty men.

So yeah not for the faint hearted, don't read if any of those topics trigger you.

Also not a book you can read in one sitting either, you gotta take your time with this one in order to feel the emotions the author wants to invoke.

Favourite characters are definitely Rue and Varina. Especially Rue, no matter what she was going through, what she was doing, good or bad, I was rooting for her. Something about Rue that couldn't get me to hate her.

I liked the characters and their stories, it all felt very real despite some magical realism elements. I guess I wish it was a little shorter and more fast paced, but overall an important book to read.

I feel like I gave this one a fair chance. I loved the audiobook narrator and the way she brought the characters to life. The story felt very authentic and dealt with some really hard issues surrounding slavery and the war. The reason I didn't finish and couldn't get into it was that it was really confusing for me.
Something about the way the author jumped between time periods didn't make sense in my head. At one point, maybe a quarter of the way into the audiobook, one of my kids got my phone and skipped ahead and I didn't notice because | was already so confused. From there it obviously was confusing, but I could tell it was still jumping around which characters it was following during which time periods. Thinking about finishing made my head hurt

I loved everything except Bruh Abel. I'm not sure how much of it was intentional, but he felt more like a plot device than a character. I loved the time slipping and it was very easy to visualize. I'm surprised it hasn't been made into a movie yet.
