The most interesting thing about this book was how our unresolved traumas can affect how we view the experiences of others. Society has taken a renewed interest in justice but many characters in the book are struggling with the fact that they will never have justice and might never even have the chance to tell their story of what happened to them. It affects how they view the stories of people with similar experiences and erases peers who might have been going through the same thing and not talking about it. There is the suggestion that maybe there are still some injustices from the past we can fix, but it's hard and sometimes requires people to give their support despite the hurt they feel that their own injustices can't be fixed or the harm from them is invisible. Ultimately, a very thought-provoking novel that feels very timely and tells a good story through imperfect characters.

I loved the realistic characters, the mystery build-up, and the 90s boarding school nostalgia. Also as a public defender I appreciated the realistic depiction of the criminal justice system - so many authors get this wrong and it's such a relief when they do their homework. I didn't love the poetic device where the author would randomly list vague news stories about violence against women, it felt a little overwrought. And the ending was a bit abrupt for my taste.
