Okay I admit it. I've never read any of Robert Aspirin's Myth books before. Oh, I've MEANT to read them for years. In fact, I have owned this very volume since approximately 1989. This book has followed me through probably 6 or 7 moves including a trip across country. So finally finally finally I ripped it down off the shelf and read it within a few days. Okay. I don't know why I've waited so long. It's really pretty good.

Skeeve is a sweet and naive young man (sweet considering that prior to his apprenticeship to the Wizard Garkin he considered a career in thievery). But, after witnessing the assassination of Garkin he finds himself apprenticed now to Aahz. Aahz is also a nice enough fellow considering that he's a Pervert (That's Pervect!!! Thank you very much) with green scaly skin and a purple tongue. I'm sure that won't attract any attention at all. Together, they set off on an often humorous adventure to get even, or get Aahz's powers back...or something.

It was fun!

Fun, cheesy, and witty. This book plays on sci-fi and fantasy tropes and is light-hearted while still adult.

That was a very enjoyable book. It was not amazing or a masterpiece or something utterly original but it was funny and interesting without being too long! A quick and easy read! 3.5 stars!

Glib, quick, facile, and plays upon all the cliches of High Fantasy. Skeeve and the Demon are pale descendants of T. H. White's Arthur and Merlin -- the young innocent bumpkin ready for great adventure and his anachronistic mentor from a more advanced universe in medieval setting that renders him instantly into something wise and powerful.

Decently written, snappy dialogue, but 2D characters and ludicrous situations characterize the entire series. No real plot or character development, no growth or expansion into philosophy (i.e. Discworld), just more of the same, ad infinitum. Worth a quick read when there's nothing else to do, I guess...

It did not capture me at all. I got about halfway in (reading it digitally so I don't have a page count) and oof. The characters read flat to me, and the jokes are very tongue in cheek. I feel like every time the characters make one, they turn at me to wink and wait for my laughter. The reader is in on the "joke", but main character Skeeve is not. An example: "We'll have to bite the bullet" "what's a bullet?"

By the time the characters got to town and we met a woman, she's described as a "trollop" on multiple occasions with 0 irony, and she's of course into both (disguised) main characters, because that's her job. Oh yeah and she almost falls out of the window and her dress because she is so into them. That's the point where I put the book down. The grating humor up to this point and then the first woman we meet being described in this manner was enough for me. I've got a lot other books waiting that I'm looking forward to.

So yeah, in short, it's old (olllld) school fantasy with those old school tropes and issues. If that's your jam and you don't mind that, go for it, but I personally think there's better stuff out there now.

Recommended by my cousin...I didn't know what to expect. It reminds me of [b:Pathfinder|8100267|Pathfinder (Pathfinder, #1)|Orson Scott Card|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1347612850s/8100267.jpg|12873035], but without the space ships and science fiction-y parts. So it was less complicated, but still a great book (if you like fantasy, as it is "Another Fine Myth").

Amusing, but it didn't pull me in enough to continue with the series.
