I'm re-reading this book and it's just as captivating as the first time. I love the story line and the writing style. If you like magik and far-off lands, this is a great read!

Read this as part of PopSugar's 52 books in 52 weeks. This was for the category "read a book that was written in the year you were born."
It's pretty good for what it is. fantasy/magik is not really my thing, so it took longer than usual to get through, but the world building was enough to keep my interest. Read it if you were born in '78! woot!

Love these stories - and Robert Asprin as an author and his worlds. I read these quite a few years back and when I discovered they were being released in ebook, I got them to read again.
This is the first book in the series. Skeeve is studying magic under Garkin, when they get into a fuss about Skeeve not practicing as he should. So, to prove a point, Gharkin summons a demon - unfortunately, an assassin finds Gharkin at the same time. The demon summoned is an inhabitant of Perv (a Pervect), a friend of Gharkin's, unfortunately Gharkin had removed Aaahz' magical power when he summoned him and Gharkin is dead. So, now Aahz has no magic, Skeeve is an apprentice without an understanding of magic or of the other worlds. There are assassins still after them. Aahz has no way to get them to another world and doesn't trust Skeeve's abiities to transport them. So, they go looking for the man who sent the assassins after Gharkin.
There is plenty of confusion due to Skeeve not understanding many of Aahz' references and only having a very basic understanding of magic and none of other worlds besides his homeworld of Klah (which makes Skeeve a Klahd).
These stories are full of fun, puns, complications and surprising twists. As when Skeeve acquires a dragon at the Bazaar on Deva because it eats his sleeve!

Read this years ago when it first came out and loved it then. I listened to the audiobook version and like it even better. This series is intended as humerous. If you prefer serious fantasy, pass on by.

This was the series that made me a fantasy fan and re-reading this was *almost* as good as reading it the first time. NOTHING could have been better than that.

After his mentor is assassinated while summoning a demon, Skeeve is apprenticed to said demon (short for 'dimension hopper'), a green-scaled, worldly-wise, and very sarcastic fellow named Aahz, who lost his powers in the summoning. Together they must take on the assassin, while saddled with a would-be demon hunter named Quigley (currently frozen), a green-haired assassin named Tanda (who tried to kill, then help them), and a young dragon named Gleep, who has become very attached to poor Skeeve.

I love the characters, love the humor... This was a perfect little read.

This was an okay book - another offering from book club. It's quite short, but sets up for the following books. (Which I probably will not read). I liked the Deveels and the Imps, Asprin was clever to play with our concept of those ideas and make them creatures from other dimensions.

2.5. I was having a really good time with this, but somewhere in between in fell flat. It had so much wasted potential!
