Being as ridiculously addicted to this show, I just had to read this. I was not disappointed. Of course they couldn't keep every aspect of the show in there as it was told from Emma and Snow's point of views and they weren't in every scene. But it was still awesome. Now all I need is one of these from Regina's point of view.

As a fan of the tv show Once Upon A Time, I was a little disappointed with this. I was expecting more backstory or something like a companion book to the show. Instead it was just a retelling of season 1 from only Emma and Snow's point of view. The show is an ensemble show so only focusing on those two characters really destroys the story.
If I never saw the show and read this I would be confused and would say the secondary characters were really lacking.

Lu en une soirée, très fidèle à la série, peut-être même un peu trop à mon goût... On voit certains personnages un peu plus approfondis mais rien de spectaculaire non plus.

2.5 stars. Normally I would round up, but the editing, or lack there of, forced it down to a 2 star. Seriously, did any editors look at this before sending it to publishing? The story was a nice summary of the first season of the TV show Once Upon A Time even if some creative liberties were taken with the details of the story, some of which I could have done without. But the amount of blatant grammatical errors (non-capitalized names, missing basic punctuation, “Miss Gold” when the character is “Mr. Gold”, etc) made this book feel like a quick cash grab on ABC/Disney’s part.

It was good to read and relive the first season in my head, but if you haven't seen season 1, it's probably not worth reading (if you do read it first, don't miss the show!! It's better, especially the ending)
Did not like Emma saying "Jesus" once (and I don't remember hearing that in the show)

This book pretty much follows season one of the TV show, which is quite a bit of information to stuff inside one book. However, it does cut some stories or has Henry briefly re-account the basics as he tells it to Emma.
I did have some issues with the way the author chose to portray some of the scenes, and I feel that sometimes there was more telling of events than taking the opportunity to delve into Emma's thoughts and personality more. There's a part where Regina outright calls Emma a slut, which to the best of my knowledge was never said flat out, and I kind of eyebrow raised over that choice - yes, Regina is an awful terrible human being, and she certainly implied she felt this way about Emma in the series at some points, but she's much more subtle than that, so I don't really know why it was chosen to be added, but whatever.
It's good for what it is, but I'd hoped for a bit more.

This was well written for sure but if you've watched the show, it gave absolutely zero new information. It was basically the script for the entire first season in novel form. Since I hadn't watched the first season in a while, it was kind of nice to remember a few things I had forgotten but if it's all super fresh in your mind, I wouldn't waste your time reading it right now.

I am a fan of the show and was excited to see a book come out, unfortunately this book is just a copy and paste of the shows first season, down to the chapters being the same names as the episodes, in order. I could have just turned my captions on the tv and gotten the same thing. Except the book is written from Emma and Snow's point of view only, Henry fills in some gaps but they leave out so much by leaving out the other characters points of views. Very disappointed.
