This was a friends to enemies to lovers. A second chance romance when the first chance was a lame ass non attempt by Kiran.
Maeva “Seffi” was found in the woods, abandoned as a child. Her Dakkari parents adopted her, raising her along side her Dakkari sister, Laru. Maeva grows up in a saruk by the sea, instead of the usual horde. Maeva knows pretty quickly that she’s in love with Kiran, the Sorakkar’s (retired Vorakkar) son.
Kiran loves his best friend Maeva, but like a sister. He knows that she cares for him, but he’s seen another Dakkari male show interest in Maeva just because she’s human, and Kiran wants better than that for Maeva. Kiran doesn’t want to take advantage of their friendship and risk ruining it, and he has the ultimate goal of becoming a Vorakkar, so Kiran pushes Maeva away.
Maeva, always bold in her attentions, offered Kiran her cup of wine, hoping that he’ll drink from it, as a sign of his returning her interests, but he shoots her down in front of everyone. Later, inspired by his kisses, she takes her clothes of in front of him, and he rejects her, breaking her heart. The next day he leaves without saying goodbye. When Maeva’s mother dies, she sends word to Kiran, knowing he loved her too, but she’s met with no response- his mother later telling her that he cannot make it. Nine years pass with Kiran out in the wild lands, running his horde. He never returns to Maeva. Maeva becomes a nurse and is training to be the saruk’s doctor.
Then, Kiran comes back. And with the death of his horde’s mokkira (doctor), Kiran comes looking for Maeva to serve his horde.
Man, it’s hard because I wanted to hate Kiran. I know I’m not supposed to fault him for not feeling our girl Maeva, but I still wanted to kick him in his golden shins. Especially after he’s caught KISSING HER SISTER!! I was so convinced that I could never be team Kiran, but our author doesn’t believe it should be so and she turned the story around. Thankfully there were noble intentions, miscommunication, and severe suffering from our hero, otherwise I would’ve thrown the book in the desert (I live in the desert, otherwise it would be a lake, a landfill, or a ravine of some sort). Kiran finally got his shit together and realizes that he’s not only made a mistake, but he wants Maeva to be his Morakkari.
I’m happy Maeva wasn’t quick, or easy, to make her fall in love again. Because from Maeva’s pov, Kiran is below what she deserves. I’m glad Kiran had to work for her forgiveness, because he was a major douche.... yeah yeah, I can’t fault him for not having feelers, I know.
Other than our hero and heroine, this new story shows that things on Dakkar are getting bad. The Dothikkar doesn’t leave the city, but hands out dangerous orders to our Vorakkar’s, without assistance. The alien settlements are suffering, and there a mysterious red mist that is hanging over the dead mountain, the ghertun’s home, and forcing the planets wildlife to relocate and become dangerous in their aggressive behavior and attacks. It’ll be interesting to see where the story goes from here. We have a little bit of hope with the Dothikkar’s bastard son becoming Vorakkar, and a prophecy that he’ll be great. I can’t wait to meet him!
4 stars.

Okay, this one finally did it; I am leaving camp! Because I cannot with this asshole. Nine years. NINE. YEARS. You know what you did. Like, seriously bro? You’re not even all that - you think you’re the only hot piece of Dakkari man meat around here? What, like it’s hard? Please. Dakkari males are hot, it’s just facts; you’re not special. And what, you suddenly decide “you know what, I changed my mind I think I will,” and you go back expecting what? Grateful arms open wide? For what, your one year of abstinent suffering? After that!? That thing you did and then continued to do after that thing and what that did to her! (Being vague here to avoid spoilers, but I have to get this out and trust me I’m right to be this indignant). Honestly, were I her friend, I would have been like “no way, girl. Nope. Don’t do it. That guy? He’s basically king of a Ren Fen, except the costumes are terrible and even a Ren Fen has permanent structures to protect you from winter weather. Take my advice, go to Dothik, throw a stick and claim any one of the dozen of hot Dakkari males that it hits on its way to the ground. Trust me.” And I would have been right!
Zoey Draven, I have mad respect for you and the very sexy work you put in for the benefit of those like myself who are hanging on by a thread, but fuck this guy I hate him.

There has to be one book in a series that doesn't do it for me and this one is it. I'm not a fan of second chance romance or friends to lovers. Seeing a young naive woman pine over an arsehole who was meant to be a supposed friend totally frustrated the hell out of me. Then when they meet up again 9 years later he's still an arsehole but he's now a King and she's still naive contrary to what she's been trying to tell herself.

another great storyline
Second chance romances have never really been my thing but the ongoing storyline has my hooked
Really enjoying this series
Can be read as a stand-alone but I recommend reading in order to understand fully

My fave or maybe that's an understatement since I just love this series entirely! But you'll always get me with the gut punch and angsty romances. And this is exactly it. Plus, I was ready for some much needed groveling which I knew we'd be getting. Maeva was such an amazing character, and I instantly fell in love with her. Kiran definitely had some work to do!

Hmmm yeah, I did like it but I do wish that more of these stories would have a heroine who's at least been with a guy before she meets her king (there is at least one book in the series where this is the case, which is good). Sure, she was barely with that guy but at least she got some action along the way. Not like the "Broken" girl, even if she did try.
She should have tried harder!!! ;)
Anyway ... this book had the usual stuff that I love about this series - action, adventure, romance, steaminess, etc. Sure, I've never been a big fan of the "virgin girl meets man ho guy" thing, and yet I'm reading and loving this series for the most part.
