A beautiful, emotional love story!

Kiran, a Dakkari, is destined for great things. Although only a young boy himself, he sees Maeva, ridiculed as a young human, and comes to her defense. Their friendship grows and, for Maeva, that friendship blossomed into love.

But Kiran was destined to become a Varakkar, training away from their saruk (village). On the last night before he leaves, he says some horribly heartbreaking words to Maeva, breaking her young heart.

A time after he is gone, Maeva experiences a tragedy (being vague here to avoid spoilers) and sends a message to Kiran hoping he would return when she needs his support most, even as a friend, but he does not.

And with each passing day, she comes to understand that Kiran would never love her the way she loved him. Years pass and she shuts her emotions down, training to become a healer for her village but not allowing anyone to get too emotionally close to her.

Then Kiran returns...nine years later, as a Horde king. A king who needs a healer for his people.

While she agrees to travel to his village and spend one season as his healer, Maeva still harbors anger and sadness towards Kiran. For Kiran, bringing Maeva to his settlement opens a way for him to make amends for his previous callous behavior towards Maeva (again, vague to avoid spoilers) and convince her that he truly does love her and wants her to be his queen.

And here’s where the true love story begins. Kiran has a lot to make up for with regards to Maeva. Can he convince her that she IS his true love? The one he wants to be his queen? And, for her part, can Maeva be open to hearing his story, one that brings back painful memories for her, but can also provide healing for her battered heart? Can she do that or is she too afraid of what might happen if she opens her heart to Kiran again?

ugh this one hurt my heart. i will say it every single time, but second chance romance is not my favorite trope -- it usually hurts my soul & i cannot forgive the MCs sometimes. THIS ONE?!?!?!? I LOVED. now, it *did* rely on the misunderstanding trope, but the way zoey had it come to light made me like it. now, did it still hurt me?? YES. but was it still super duper hot?!?!? ALSO YES.

*4.5

I enjoyed the storyline on this one, but felt it was lacking the same editorial attention as the other three. I LOVE the angst, but wish the turnover from angsty heartbreak to love had been a little more gradual.

I couldn't get over his earlier "rejection".
