I’ve read some mixed reviews on this book, and I can see why.
I’m always ready for an angsty second chances romance, but the reason they separated was a little glossed over and the catalyst for them coming back together was too external for my liking. So I didn’t feel the full impact, even though I did enjoy seeing Kiran being single minded in trying to win Maeva back. The overarching series plot also didn’t move much, probably because it’s setting up for major events in the next book, which meant this book felt a bit like filler.
But, on the positive side, I really liked how different this was to earlier books in that it wasn’t another relationship with heavy captive/enemy vibes. Although human, Maeva was raised as Dakkari so there was no culture shock. She had a supportive family, and part of her arc was about her career as a healer, which gave a nice balance to the relationship angst.
So overall, not the strongest of the series, but I still enjoyed reading it.

I was tempted to skip this book based on the second chance trope, having devoured books 1-3 of the series within a fortnight. I’m so glad I didn’t. Zoey Draven is becoming an auto-buy author for me. Her writing is so beautifully understated with amazing characterisation. I loved it!
I LOVED that there was sooooo much grovelling, like SO MUCH of it. The grovelling made it totally worthwhile, even though the hero was kinda cheating-y (he kissed her sister once, even though he knew the heroine was in love with him already, and he banged who knows how many women during his Trials and their 9-year-separation, while the heroine was, OF COURSE, a virgin). I wish the heroine hadn't been a virgin. The hero's grovelling is what made me go through the whole book, otherwise I might have dnf'd when the heroine seemed like a total doormat at the beginning. I liked that the heroine became so cold and didn't immediately forgive the hero even when it was apparent that he hadn't deliberately missed her mother's funeral. I loved that he had to work for it.
I really liked the writing style though, will definitely read more books by this author.

Plot:

- he eventually convinces her to come with him to his horde for just the frost season as his head healer, something she has thrown herself into for the past 9 years.
- on the journey over, they get attacked, and H shifts so he takes the attack, getting wounded in the process. As she tends to his wound, they begin talking, with h trying to remain indifferent while H tries to get back the h full of laughter and joy he once knew. Somehow they get start talking about matches of horde kings, with her arguing that some aren't love matches but advantageous ones, and he retorts that he should make her his queen then to get a healer for his horde.
- they arrive to his horde, and she begins to settle in to her tent and healer's tent. However, he assigns her a piki, which is like a handmaiden to the queen, still insisting that he will marry her. h doesn't take him seriously, after not being able to trust him to not break her heart

- her piki tells her that although H has been with others, he hasn't with anyone in the past year, and has never tried to take a queen
- the next day at the feast before the frost, h gets upset watching all the women put goblets on his table, remembering how she did that last night she saw him, and he didn't drink from hers. So, she starts dancing with this human guy who she met the other day. This makes H jealous, and so he goes up to her, only for her to run away.
- He follows her and finds her standing in the middle of the lake, and he gets her to come back to shore. She learns that the morning after that night, he tried to say goodbye, but went to her house and her dad wouldn't let him. Also, he never to came to her mother's burial because his mother had prevented him from knowing. The two things she was hurt most by weren't even his fault. She falls asleep, and he brings her back to his tent.
- they talk, and he tells her he was just too scared to change the nature of their relationship when they were younger, and if they did get together, he was scared that she would leave him one day. He still wants her as his queen, but she still insists on leaving after the frost, so he just asks her if he can have her for just the frost. She says she needs time to answer him.
- the next morning, she wakes up in his arms, and he gives her a necklace of the flowers he calls her by, that he commissioned before he went to the village to say goodbye. He had wanted her to join his horde, and when she didn't, he kept it in his chests meant for his future wife.
- they finally have sex
- h goes off into the woods to collect a fungi that will help the upcoming human pregnancy. However, she gets attacked, and her scream terrifies H as he rushes over to save her
- although she promised him she wouldn't leave camp, when she receives a message that her father got injured, she rushes back home
- she reunites with her sister, and her sister admits that their mother though h and H would always end up together. Then, H shows up, back from his trip with the other horde kings, and takes care of her. As her father recovers, he and H come to an understanding, and H asks him and her sister if they would join his horde if h accepts his offer for her to be his queen. What he didn't know was that h had already told her father that morning that she had decided to come back with him.

It was giving nothing.
I absolutely hate all the added unnecessary alien jargon, but I absolutely LOATHED the replacement of the word fuck. Silly.

This series is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. Zoey Draven writes such vivid stories and I absolutely adore the Horde Kings of Dakkar. I can't recommend it enough. If you like Milla Vane, or Kristen Ashley's Fantasyland series, you will love this. This is by far one of my favorite fantasy romance series of this past year. Broken by the Horde King was phenomenal, right from the start, Zoey made me feel so much for these characters and I loved their journey. I only wish it had been longer because I didn't want it to end.
This book is without doubt one of the best that I have ever read. OMG. Seriously, Broken by the Horde King is beyond freaking good. It will have you feeling all the emotions.
I really like the FMC, Maeva. She is both gentle and strong, she definitely has a backbone. The MMC will make you hate him before you fall in love with him. I haven't read a lot of second chance romances but this one took a hold of my heart. The FMC and MMC's story starts from childhood friends, goes to unrequited love, moves to second chance romance, and ends as two soulmates who met when they were young and were always meant to be together. This 4th book of the Horde Kings of Dakkar furthers the overall plot of the series and includes a generous amount of well written spice. Honestly, this series continues to get better with every book. I for sure recommend Broken by the Horde King and the series as a whole!

She is focused and about to achieve her dream of being a top healer. He is a powerful horde king who comes back to their childhood town to request she become his hordes medic knowing she can’t refuse the opportunity?! SOLD.
Second chance romance always gets me. This series honestly just gets better and better! This book is the longest so far in the series and I wondered why but it was perfect. I loved them, I loved the plot and also loved how Zoey sprinkled more over the overarching series plot in for us. I’m obsessed
