Oh God....this book reads like a "how-to" survival guide, but with tips that are seem unfairly weighted. I listened to this as an audio book because I felt that as a well-read person, I should at least make an attempt to read this "classic", but also as a self-aware person, knew that I would never in my life actually sit down and do the reading. I spend a lot of time in the car and I thought that this would be the perfect opportunity to get this book off of my check list.
I'm five hours in and we still haven't met Friday! I just listened to Robinson talk about how many clay pots he made and all the many uses for his hand-woven baskets...for 20 freakin' minutes!
It's also hard to listen to a lot of the blantant racism/imperialism that is a part of the book's foundation. As a person living in modern society, it's general knowledge that the themes of this novel are outdated and backwards. However, at the time, in history, these were accepted and expected attitudes for everyone to have. So, begrudgingly, I tell myself to let it go.
Robinson has a savior complex that is as big as his freakin' island. Even after being stranded on the island for 28 years and finally being rescued, he still decides to go back to spread the good word to all the naïve natives. How thoughtful.
Historically, I think this is an important work and something that deserves study. But I did not enjoy the ride.
