This was such an entertaining book.   Apparently this series was super popular back in the day (and back in my childhood--Tori, I'm looking at you!), so I was truly surprised I didn't hear of it sooner than I did.  This was a fun little romp along the east coast, and it was great watching Freddy and his pals meet the president, outwit some crocodiles, and find some gold.  This is one of the few books from the past that has actually....aged really well.  So, kudos to you, Freddy!

I think "the American Winnie-the-Pooh" is the best comparison I've heard. A simple children's chapter book (simpler than the later entries in the series) but with enough sly humor to keep the parents involved. In that way, comparable to the first Little House on the Prairie book, the other chapter book we've read as a family this year.

1927 story of some barnyard animals who decide to travel South for the winter. That's all there is to say, really, it's rather dull. The pig's poetry might be the worst part of the book.

it's about a bunch of farm animals who are tired of the cold so they go to florida, and it's absurd and unbelievable and I love it.
it just thoroughly delivered, man.

This is the first of a series I love. It's clear that the author doesn't have the surety with the characters that he will have starting in the third book, but it's delightful to watch the characters drawn and put into action for the first time. It's a fun story and I thoroughly enjoyed it, again.

Delightful short tale of a farm “family” of animals who decided that in order to escape the cold of winter they will migrate south. They are inspired by the tales that the traveling birds tell them of a lush place where the beds are never cold and everyone is happy. Florida! Along the way they run into adventures of all sorts. I like that throughout the story different characters are coming up with creative solutions to their problems. And that generally those solutions involve working together as a team, which us usually successful – along with being comical. I love Jinx the cat, though he does seem to get the animals into trouble more often than out of it. And the two spiders, Mr. and Mrs. Web are a delightful addition to the traveling bunch.

This is one of the funniest, warmest books I’ve ever read! The whole family laughed and laughed! This book provides some wonderful mementoes and connections for our family. Highly recommended!

So charming, so fun! The animals have such distinct and entertaining personalities, and there's enough peril to keep the tension up but not enough to make the story stressful. This is great sick day reading material -- just makes you feel cozy inside. Freddy doesn't really emerge as the star in this book -- all of the animals have an opportunity to shine. I was particularly fond of Mr. and Mrs. Webb (the spiders) and Mrs. Wiggins (the cow). I'd argue that Mr. Webb is the unsung hero of the story.

I'd recommend this one as a read-aloud for young kiddos, and as a good selection for lower-elementary students who are reading above grade level. :)
