John Steinbeck

Steinbeck's powers of description and his characterization are second to none. This story is an interesting one- not much moves the plot, but the characters are rich and selfish and selfless and insecure and real. I kind of hated all of them but I also loved all of them at different times. Steinbeck shows humanity as it is, which at some points is surprising and disturbing and at other times is glorious and hopeful.

I was actually pleasantly surprised by this book. Steinbeck really delves into the characters in ways that are surprising and ring true, even 60+ years later. I especially enjoyed that none of the characters come away clean; everyone has pretty and ugly sides that come out by the end. I wasn't even that annoyed by the inconclusive ending. Overall, very enjoyable; but readers should know what they're in for. Had to watch as my mother read this in frustration in the car; she was elated when she finally finished and could read her action-packed Stephen King. :)

“Salesmen always spotted trucks and stopped, because it is generally believed that truck stop drivers are great connoisseurs of roadside coffee and food”

Wow, really shocked at how much I enjoyed this short read from Steinbeck, the way he describes people the emotion they feel and the lives they lead is incredibly poignant and filled with emotion.

The story itself is relatively straightforward but for me it was a page turner and to be fair it doesn’t have a massive story climax and it doesn’t need it, If anything I wanted more, wanted to learn what happened to all the people riding the bus and I guess my imagination will have to fill in the blanks, I loved the journey.

Definitely digging into more of Steinbecks work as this was my first read of his since I read of mice and men in school

This is actually one of my favorite Steinbeck novels. I've always wanted to write about my experiences on busses and trains, but when I read this book, I thought...what's the use? When you have a book like this, what more needs to be said?

Yet another book to remind me why all men are pigs

Steinbeck. Sexual tension. Underrated comic loveliness. With the usual undercurrent (you should pardon) of sadness. I understand there was a movie, but I can never watch it, because Mansfield Schmansfield, Camille should've been played by Gloria Grahame. What was I talking about. Gloria Grahame distracted me. Right. Steinbeck.

Helluva writer.

The Wayward Bus🍒🍒🍒🍒
By John Steinbeck
1942?

When Steinbeck wrote ' The Wayward Bus', post WW II, the values of honesty and character were prevalent. Brought to light in this beautiful written novel are the adversity of personalities and lifestyles pulled together through circumstance. Centered in San Ysidro, Rebel Corners is a luncheonette and tranfer point to catch a bus to the town. The travellers are forced to spend a night together in the luncheonette due to mechanical problems with the bus. Finally boarding the bus, this group of discontented passengers with quite diverse backgrounds and lifestyles are forced to weather the storm and they find that maybe the one thing we have in common isn't our title or what we are...but who we allow ourselves to be.
Excellent.

Ei missään tapauksessa hauska. Avaa mielenkiintoisesti ajankuvaa 40-luvun lopun Amerikasta. Kertoo ihmisistä, ulkoisesti ja sisäisesti, osittain epämiellyttävänkin tarkasti. Kuvitus oli kiva bonus, jota harvoin näkee.
