I was excited yo read Of Shadow and Moonlight after hearing the author talk about it. It seemed like it would be right up my allie. Unfortunately I didn't love but I didn't hate it either. I'm hoping I just wasn't in the mood for it and when/if I eventually do a reread I may change my mind one way or the other.

Read my book review of Luna Laurier’s Of Shadow and Moonlight, book one in the Shadow and Moonlight series. This is a paranormal romance story.

The story was ok. Fresh. Something new. So for that reason, 3-stars.

The story had potential... but the execution was not great. I submitted 4 content errors to Kindle before I started to lose focus on this book. Content errors really detract from the quality of a book overall as it says to the reader "we rushed this out the door without even doing our own cold read". My suggestion to this author is to find a new editor, and spend more time with your stories in review before they are published.

Overall I’d say I enjoyed the book. There were a few things that stood out to me as red flags… but because I’ve followed the author on the socials I don’t think it was deliberately… homophobic? I guess I’d say. The biggest question that came up
is that they’re always talking about how feeding from other immortals is the best way to get healing/energy and whatever. And it’s always a “female” that must be brought. Later it says “families” volunteer for helping with feedings. So it’s not that only female blood gives energy. But that they will only drink from someone of the opposite sex. Like for why? “It can get a bit intimate” even without sex so therefore it can’t happen with the gender you’re not sexually attracted to? I didn’t like this aspect. It seemed so unnecessary. Cas could have still felt protective about him drinking anyone else’s blood and it didn’t have to be such a hetero thing.
also there are no queer characters. And the most POC description we get is vaguely Greek. This is a problem in many many books and I have faith miss Luna will do better in the future. Based on her socials, she doesn’t seem like a homophobic author. These were just elements that stood out to me. Also this was the second edition which it seems many chapters were added to. Which is great! But I found a multitude of copy editing errors in this second edition. Luna get your money back, babes. For me it didn’t take away from the storytelling. But I know this is a heinous crime for some readers to see this many errors in their copy. I would happily copy edit this book for free. I mean that! It’s a good story. I love the tropes that were explored. I enjoyed the pacing. And I even enjoyed the dark elements that were included. The torture scenes were done in a way that didn’t make me want to throw up and light the book on fire. But still showed enough to understand the trauma. Its a delicate line! I’ll probably read the next book also. I’m hopeful we see more diverse representation and maybe explanation for
the homophobic rituals surrounding feeding.

This book had great potential but it fell very flat in my opinion. The characters felt too grown for a school environment. And the writing felt very YA. It was a miss for me as I started being irritated with the writing and the characters.
