Nothing Ever Happens in Littlehaven... until now. Izzy is starting year 8, looking forward to starring in the school's theatre production. Until one week into the term her parents sit her down with her siblings and her Dad tells them that he is actually a woman and will be starting his transition.
This is such an important book, it's an excellent introduction for anyone who wants to know more from a transgender perspective. It's written from a child's point of view but shows the perspective from all the family. It's a family story full of love and respect for each other ❤❤

I for the most part really enjoyed this. I think my biggest ish was that it seems to have been a UK/English novel that was half-heartedly “americanized” in the editing process to appeal to U.S. youth. In the process something got lost in translation, and it was distracting and kind of a bummer. IF you’re and author or editor who has the ability to do such things, please don’t. Keep the text in it’s UK English version. U.S. kids will figure it out.

What I love about this book is that it feels so ordinary, packed with regular-life stuff like a school play, best friend drama, a nasty older sister, and homework anxiety. It's certainly a shock and a source of Big Feelings to Izzy when her dad comes out as trans, but all that normalcy works as insulation for the reader. Hagger-Holt does a great job of letting Izzy work through worries, fears, and even terrible thoughts while never wavering in her sense of certainty that her family is strong and that things will be alright. This is, of course, a great pick for a reader with a trans family member, but any kid is sure to see themselves reflected in this story that is, at heart, about understanding that parents are people too, and that their wants and needs are valid even if their kids feel embarrassed by them.
