3.5*? I can’t change this on mobile but the version I read is the 2014 commentary. Which increases the appreciation for all of the pieces tenfold. P interesting in super nerd-town way

What surprised me the most about these poems is how fun all of them were to read. I love the songs and poetry included in Tolkien’s other Middle-earth books (many of which show up here), but I think as a whole, I enjoyed these more.

My favorites are The Man in the Moon Stayed Up Too Late, Errantry, The Stone Troll, and The Last Ship, but there’s not really a bad one in the batch. This comment might be anachronistic, but it reminded me a lot of Shel Silverstein books I loved as a kid.

The editorializing and notes that actually make up something like half of the text are also pretty insightful without getting too into the weeds on anything in particular (something I’ve found some Tolkien commentary prone to).

It's a collection of poems, with a lot of commentary from the knowledgeable editors.
