Somehow, it didn't take me long to read this, maybe because I couldn't actually wait to finish it. Not in a bad way necessarily; this novel had quite a few twists and turns, keeping a reader glued, really, if only if wasn't so easy to guess the whole plot, and characters. The story, including the characters, are so so so predictable, and I don't know another way to say it... basic? Stereotypical. I feel as though I have read this story many times before.
In another light, I think the author was trying to take this approach, or so I thought when I started reading, I couldn't believe it, very cliché. If McManus was/is trying to take this approach, I have no idea why, especially in the time she wrote them, which was only a few years ago. Certainly, this type of mystery novel, with the characters, plot, and twist ending 'no one' could predict has been around for far longer. I don't get it, but perhaps McManus' writing is not for me. I will not be pursuing her other books., or the sequel for this one.

I don’t know why it’s so hard for people to admit that sometimes they’re just assholes who screw up because they don’t expect to get caught.
WHAT A WILD RIDE.
At each characters introduction I was SURE I was going to hate this book. Cliché after cliché accompanied the first 4o pages or so, but then something happened. I started to actually care for these people?? Not saying they are terrible people, but the amount of indifference I had at the beginning is something I expected to feel during the whole book. It's not often that I feel unattached to characters, but when it happens it usually sticks.
However, the amount of CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT needs to be applauded. Addy, Bronwyn, Cooper and Nate are my children and I must protect them all.
I'll admit the writing wasn't the best I've ever read, but I got used to it and don't have any major complaints.
Happy to say I am looking forward to the sequel and any other books written by Karen M. McManus.
Also, major props to that ending/epilogue for
Spoiler
not only not having Nate and Bronwyn end up together right awaySpoiler
not having Bronwyn cheat on Evan when Nate apologizes/confesses his feelings.

It's been a while since I read a crime - mystery. And I quite enjoyed it. The narrative was gripping with suspects as narrators. There were red herrings as well as actual clues scattered artfully through out.
It was an engaging read.
