I am so pleased to read the overall positive reactions to this book! I read 'Of Mice and Men' and 'The Grapes of Wrath' in high school and enjoyed them, especially the latter.

I was able to pick up a first edition of this at the library book sale the summer after I graduated and I loved it. It definitely does not seem like a Steinbeck book at all but he clearly had a good time writing this and it shows. Picking on the French is like shooting fish in a barrel but Steinbeck had a lot of affection for them and that's what makes this satire a good read.

Loved this political satire, fun story

A political satire by John Steinbeck. Not bad, but I may have appreciated it more if 1. I was raised in France 2. I understood the political scene of the time and 3. I liked political satire.

Funny, wholesome, clever, thought-provoking & heartwarming, all-at-once. Great book!

I had no idea what this book was about when I first started it - mostly because it's a gift for graduation from my highschool - I was just very excited about reading another book by John Steinbeck (I loved Of Mice and Men and I have a feeling I might love some other books of his too), but this one just wasn't for me, nope. Though, I loved the irony of this book, the things that are criticised in this book that was published in 1957 still happen and I guess that only means some things will never change in politics.

im not too satisfied with this one, mr. steinbeck :(

Weird but I liked it.

Steinbeck wrote satire? Set in France? Is this a joke?

Light-hearted political satire is perhaps not what one expects from Steinbeck, but this was a late work and the late works can be characterised as attempting not to be what one expects from Steinbeck...yet the style seems all Steinbeck.

Witty and funny at first, more typically melancholic in the middle the reader is left guessing whether it will end in tragedy or not until very near the end - though my guess was correct.

Throughout there are more or less subtle and amusing observations at they way countries are ruled, the way corporations are ruled and what happens to people who are thrust into positions of power against their will.

The characters are drawn clearly and I quickly held them in affection just as i now hold this book in affection. A quirky but successful experiment from Steinbeck.
