As far as entertainment value goes, this book is good. As far as everything else, it stinks. The characters are flat and it's not well-written; it's very predictable. I'm not really into reading romance novels, but I read this one just to see why everyone was talking about it. It is definitely not "better than the Hunger Games" as someone from work said, but it is entertaining, nonetheless. I would give it a 3 for entertainment value, or a 1 for literary value, thus, a 2. Characters are flat and predictable; Christian the bad boy, Anastasia the virginal innocent one, Kate the girl that doesn't like the bad boy, and everyone else just is so predictable. In addition, E.L. James wrote like she was preparing for the GRE. Every 20 pages or so, she would throw in words only found on standardized tests like mercurial. Sure, Christian Grey is supposed to be some learned professional, but it just seemed out of place. Also, the whole "inner goddess" was so annoying. "OH my inner goddes is fuming". Yeah..that's your mind, sweetie. It just felt like she was trying to add in another chapter. There's probably a chapter worth of "my subconscious" or "my inner goddess". So annoying.
But..it was entertaining, so I'll probably read the next two books.

Heh heh heh.
I think this shouldn't have been Twilight fanfiction.

I really liked the story. I liked the character developments. I really could have done without all the talk of her inner goddess and her subconscious. It grew annoying really quickly. I understand that it is erotica but I didn't like how long some of the "sex" scenarios were. I ended up skipping through several of them. I was just bored with it by the end and I definitely will not read the other two books in the series.

I'm giving this book 5 stars because I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN!
I found ways to sneak a peek at the pages at all times and just couldn't get enough.

I haven't read very many books that would fall under the same category as Fifty Shades of Grey, so I was nervous of what to expect - especially after reading some rather negative reviews.

I think the book was VERY well written, kept me intrigued at ALL times, and moved at a suitable pace - not too rushed, not too slow.

I instantly grew drawn towards Anastasia... a girl who doesn't think much of herself, is kind, caring, and independant in her own way.
The first mentioning of Mr. Grey has me rolling my eyes thinking: "this guy is such a douche" but that QUICKLY changes! (Rolling my eyes, oh my!!)

Intense to say the least, this was a wonderful book - very different from what I regularly read. It'll have you hot and bothered in no time and yet the end leaves you wanting more and sad - a feeling that isn't common in this first book.

I'm half way through the 2nd book and can't wait to get on the 3rd. A wonderful series I'm sure - I just can't get enough.

I read this in the height of COVID boredom and it is an intro to abusive relationships. Perfect adult parody of Twilight. I hated it.
