There are several things that need addressing in this review about this book.
The writing.
The plot.
The fans.

The writing of this book is so basic and simple in the beginning. It reads like a stream of consciousness book about the world's most boring girl. 21 and a virgin? Apparently gorgeous but doesn't know it? Spare me. The main character insists on detailing what she does, eats, drinks, and thinks, blow by blow. Not interested. Several words were used incorrectly. They jarred the already bumpy prose and actually made me laugh out loud at the ridiculousness off it. Elevators reaching terminal velocity? Putting the pedal to the metal? No. Just. No.

The plot is not what it could have been. It needed several things to improve it. It seemed that James wanted to make Ana the perfect submissive and then decided it would be better if she showed a little spunk, so she changes her. Grey is obviously not the hardcore Dom she tries to make him out to be because he has so many tender moments. I'm not saying a Dom can't be tender but to make a giant song and dance about these rules and things that warrant punishment and then to do none of that, well, doesn't scream commitment to his lifestyle choice.

Ana constantly doubts herself. All the time. Why would he care about me? I'm so inexperienced. I'm so insignificant. I'm so out of my depth. Yes. She was. Her character was a 2D cut out compared to Grey. He had flaws, a facade, and a hook.

The overall plot was not too bad. There were definitely some good points. (the ending is the sole reason this gets 2 stars)
I honestly thought this could have been done better. It could have been deeper. Ana is a superficial girl and it shows. She doesn't actually grasp much about why he is like this and what things symbolise.

The fans of this book scare me. People actually think it is okay to engage in this simply because their partner wants it? Uh no. Giving your partner something when you don't enjoy it as much is one thing. Doing something that is supposedly screwing with your mind and leaving you traumatised is not on.
Women need spines. If a man won't take you the way you are compromise. Don't give in. If its a mental or physical danger (such as fearing to be hurt) get the fuck out of there. Don't be a dumbass. Love does not conquer all.

I will read the next one. I need to know how she will magically fix Grey and make him a mainstream man.

I'm not a hypocrite and I won't slate something until I've experienced it for myself, and so I sat myself down and read.

And really I can see the appeal of this 21st century Mills & Boons. That doesn't redeem it enough however. My issue starts with language, and continues through the alleyways of plot and character development. It circle back over repetition and continues to nag even when I'm able to breath a semi satisfied sigh.

I can see the appeal but it doesn't hold enough sway.

Das ist mir jetzt ziemlich peinlich, weil 1. ich bin 14, 2. viele meinen dieses Buch wäre der Horror, weil es so schlecht geschrieben ist, und 3. ich es sehr genossen habe.

So, this is the second time I read this book and I'll admit I liked it a little bit better. The fact that now I'm envisaging Grey as Jamie Dornan has nothing to do with it. Maybe.

I'm still aware of the many problems this book has, and that Anastasia is just a no-character, however, I won't deny that I enjoy reading this books and that they are a page-turner for me. Oh well. Sue me.

I don't usually write reviews but when a book is really good or really bad, I may take the time to express my opinion. This book was horrible. The writing style and the storyline were terribly juvenile. As I was reading the first few chapters, I wondered if this was a story aimed at tweens and teens. Obviously it isn’t but it felt like I was reading the diary of a love crazed teenager. Being an avid reader it was painfully obvious to me that the writer is a novice. There was no character development. I found Anastasia to be boring and immature and couldn't understand what Christian found so desirable about her. In the same way, I couldn't figure out what made Christian so appealing other than being really, really, really good looking and really, really, really rich. That coupled with all the references to his wealth ( the cars, the house, the private jet and helicopter) made the story very shallow.
Christian's character being so jealous, controlling and quick to have an "itchy palm" made the relationship borderline abusive. Ana is ordered to eat all the time, needs permission to go see her mother, needs to be reachable at all times via Blackberry and e-mail and when Christian finds out she went to a bar with her friend Jose, he shoots her a wait-until-we get-home look that scares her. Are we to find this behavior ROMANTIC?!?!
At the beginning of the book, we find that Anastasia does not drink and gets very sick when she goes out drinking with her friends. And yet, less than 24 hours later she is having a glass of wine at Christian's house and then accepts another. Later in the book, she is having several cosmos poolside with her mother in Georgia.
The (many) sex scenes in the book were...meh. I've had better. Christian tells her that he doesn’t usually have vanilla sex but it seems that save a couple of times, that’s all they do have
This book had the potential to be SO much better and I wonder if an editor even read it before it was published. Needless to say I will not be reading the remaining books of the trilogy. I'm angry enough to have wasted time and money on this rubbish.
On the positive side, I've learned a good lesson. Never again will I fall prey to other's opinion and will use my Kindle’s wonderful feature of trying a book sample before buying.

I can’t believe it’s been 10 years since this book came out, and I’m even more shocked to say that I’ve never actually read the entire series. I believe it’s long past time that I rectify that. I really enjoyed book one. I remember the ending of this book very well, and honestly I still think it was an impactful ending to the book. I liked a lot of this, but there is one thing that got annoying really quickly and that is all inner goddess stuff. Saying it one or two times? Sure no problem, but I think it was mentioned about 50, and it got old fast.

Okay. I will admit that that this book is over-hyped and not mind-blowingly awesome. The writing wasn't great, but since the book reads like YA, I was able to look past it for the most part (I did however, HATE how much the word murmur was used, jeez its called a thesaurus). That said I kinda liked the book for the most part. I was it the mood for romance and smut, the agonizing tug and pull of forbidden love and I got it. I didn't go into this book thinking it was going to be the best book ever, but I did keep an open mind and knew what I was getting into. Plus, I really want to see the movie with my friends in February because Sheriff Hottie (From Once Upon A Time) plays Christian. I'm curious enough to continue with the series.

One of the few books that I could not continue reading. Poorly done on so many fronts. Poor character development, boring story, boring characters etc. my "eye-rolling" began almost immediately. Does the author even live on this planet? When describing the roommates Mercedes-Benz, it was truncated to Merc. Who in this world says that? Benz is typically the shortened form. Maybe it was really a Mercury........but then it would really be a much older vehicle since that company has been out of business for a long time.....what a waste of time
