It's not a spoiler when this is how the book opens. Since the book opens with what should have been a major plot point/what the book leads up to, the rest of the book sorta falls flat. Sure, we see Louise changing and her becoming darker and more detached from the children, but it's hard to engage with the rest of the story when you already know the ending.
The book is okay, I have no other major complaints. This book could have been much better and thrilling than what it is. The author's writing is good, but she needed to consider her structuring more.

This book was a lesson in not knowing what really goes on behind closed doors, and in people’s heads.
I found it captivating and well written (and well translated). I was so intrigued to read about Louise, and what drove her to become the person she was and the choices she made.

Un roman noir d’une finesse rare.
J’ai trouvé que la plume de Leïla Slimani a un génie : la tristesse et l’atrocité nous saisissent sans qu’elles ne soient très clairement exprimées et, dans le même temps, il y a une véracité et une profondeur finement dépeintes et tranchantes dans les quotidiens et la psychologie de deux familles très différentes.
C’est pour ces raisons que j’ai particulièrement aimé ce roman. Il est dur par les propos sous-jacents à tout le récit. Je trouve que l’autrice parvient à décrire à merveille une mentalité et une psychologie de notre époque, notamment au travers du personnage de Myriam. Le réalisme des non-dits, des émotions, des réflexions et des désirs refoulés, inavoués et inavouables.
Le fait de connaître la fin dès le début du roman peut déplaire à beaucoup de lecteurs. Personnellement, j’ai apprécié car ainsi, Leïla Slimani nous pousse dans nos retranchements et nous force à « essayer de comprendre ». C’est la raison pour laquelle elle nous pousse à l’empathie, à l’identification, mais aussi à nous tenir crispés tout au long de l’histoire. Personnellement, c’est en cela que je me suis sentie complètement dans la peau de Myriam.

Wow. This was so powerful, and freaky as hell but I could not stop reading. Translation has also been extremely well done. Like a punch to the gut.

this book gives an insight into the disturbed mind of a perfect nanny who, through a combination of environmental factors, is slowly driven to incomprehensible madness. i hope no reader will understand it completely... i really appreciated the sharp twisted ways of the author.
