Nearly every character is this book was unloveable. They were all A-holes.

This wasn’t so much a fever dream as a fever hallucination – and not in anything that resembles a good way. It made me question my reading comprehension, as if giant swaths of story had been ripped out of the book… Only, I was listening to the audio.

The storytelling was disjointed and detail light, in a way that made it hard to understand character motivations, plot points, and really anything that would have made this an enjoyable, reading experience.

I cannot remember the last time I gave a book under three stars, and this one deserves it. 2.5 stars feels generous. Not only can I not recommend, but I would strongly advise you to steer clear of this waste of time.

This book hits like a punch in the gut. The ambiguity and bleakness make it impossible to put down as you see it rushing towards a conclusion you can’t allow yourself to believe is real. The author drops bread crumbs making you think that it’s going to be another by the numbers domestic thriller, only to set those expectations completely on their ear. I love the fact that she eschewed keeping things linear, neat and tidy, because that’s just not how life works. This book is disturbing in a wonderful way, but do not read it if you’re one of those people who has to have every question answered because you will be disappointed. As for me the understated cover belied a unique and memorable novel that will not leave me for a long time to come.
