dark emotional sad

This was such a good story. Magnificent story telling. Everything had a purpose and I loved how everything came full circle towards the end. The main character did a lot of growing and became someone really great in the end.

An intense, raw novel about a childhood friendship and how it expands many years later based upon the decision made by both parties. I absolutely loved this novel and would recommend it to anyone. Though some parts may be a bit graphic, it is well worth it.

what an intense and beautiful reflection on guilt, sacrifice, shame, and growth. there were moments in this book where the emotions of the characters felt exactly like my own — devastated, betrayed, hopeful. so many twists and turns, so much commentary on religion and self image. i loved it. i can definitely see why it’s a classic.

I liked this so much better than I anticipated I would. It was the story of a boy growing up in Afghanistan in the 70's before the Russians invaded. He finds out later in his life that the son of his father's servant, whom he betrayed as a young boy, is really his half-brother. He has a chance to redeem himself by rescuing Hassan's son, which he eventually does after some cowardly mishaps. I just kept wanting him to do the right thing and he just never could. It was very moving. it also showed a different viewpoint on the middle east - that not all middle-easterners are terrorists and that lots of middle easterners fear the Taliban. My favorite quote from this book is, "lifting him from the certainty of turmoil and dropping him into a turmoil of uncertainty."
