I think I expected something different.
The beginning of this had me hooked! I was intrigued by the mysteries of Mr. Bowditch and of course loved Radar. š However about halfway through I lost interest.Yes, probably because Radar is saved and then leaves and all of a sudden it feels like a different book. It picked back up for me when the Fair One competition started, but overall I just found the ending a little disappointing š¤·š»āāļø There was also A LOT of unexplained plot convenienceā¦
Overall I did enjoy the themes of the book with my favorite quote beingāYou get used to the amazing, thatās all. Mermaids and IMAX, giants and cell phones. If itās in your world, you go with it. Itās wonderful, right? Only look at it another way, and itās sort of awful. Think Gogmagog is scary? Our world is sitting on a potentially world-ending supply of nuclear weapons, and if thatās not black magic, I donāt know what is.ā

Ugh why is Stephen King so good??
I have to admit that the first 100ish pages were not terribly gripping, so I did knock off a star (one should never feel even slightly bored when reading the master), but when the book picked up? It REALLY picked up!
I love that Stephen King reminds us that sometimes people are just bad, and there doesn't have to be a Tragic Backstory to make them bad. Some people just suck. But he does it in a way that always leaves me hopeful.

Yes, yes, yes. Stephen King for me is a hit or a miss and this was a massive hit. From the characters to the story, it was all pure perfection. I found myself thinking back to this book during moments throughout my day and was always eager to return to its world. Iām not ashamed to say that I cried toward the end. I will always wonder about these characters and what became of them after the fact.
