I loved the illustrations at the start of each chapter. Would like more books to have this. I also like that the chapters are broken into smaller parts. Books should all do this or have small chapters. The main character Charlie I thought was really interesting though his solitary nature while kind of needed for the story seems a bit unlikely for a 17 year old. Radar obviously is a star. The first part with Mr Bowditch I really enjoyed. I would say it felt a little slow
when Charlie first gets to empis and is travelling to the city for the sundial
but greatly improved when
he is captured by the electric skeletons. From then on I felt really invested
character wise there were some that were just fine but the standout for me was
Iota, he was so good maybe also Ammit and both of their deaths were terrible. Though Iotas felt a bit flat. The killing of Kellin felt flat as he was asleep during. However Charlie seeing their ghosts when he was recovering helped a little.
The relationship between Charlie and Leah I didn't really enjoy as it didn't really have any weight to it. He just seemed to decide in one meeting that he loved her. The world building was really interesting but the focus was definitely on the people rather than the places however there were many clear references to other fairy tales and ideas all jumbled together. This is only my fourth king book but one of the ones I have enjoyed most so far.

This is the first book in a long time that I picked up and could not put back down. It was 599 pages of engaging and beautiful storytelling. My first Stephen King book and definitely not my last. My mom is a long time Stephen King reader, and I listened to the audio book of the first few pages of this book and bought it immediately. I laughed out loud, cried, and like I said, thoroughly enjoyed this book.

I sobbed through the ending. I adored Charlie’s original mission to the other, and his growth and strength. Leah felt like a real person. Fully encased in her wishes, disappointments, and strength. I know this is a story I will ponder during long walks and showers.
