This was an exhausting read- like watching the entirety of LOTR movies in one sitting. It really carried the vibe /atmosphere from Shire-like Risda to Gondor-at-its-gaudiest and finally pastoral Rivendell. Impressive and overwhelming to read this one last. A mind-blowing series of series where not-all-planets/societies in a space-faring world are the same and
(apparently) not everyone gets 'rescued.'

I really liked this one. The heroine is badass. The cover does not do her justice, she looks scared and weak, which she is not at all. She doesn’t rely on the hero to save her, she’s prepared to do the dirty work herself and work to stay alive.

This would have been 5 stars but 3 things bugged me.
1) John’s friend Mike seems like a douche. You just know he thinks women are less than and that children should be seen and not heard. Two thumbs down for him.
2) It had no Christmas feel to it. I really dislike books that are marketed as Christmas but could take place in January just as easily. There is more to Christmas than snow and a mention of how far away it is.
3) The final kill. Badass chicks deserve badass endings.

You can read it as a stand alone easily.
