This is a very English "mad romp" sort of novel with recent college graduates who stumble upon a secret creepy "old gods" cult in a lovely English-inspired countryside and a strict social hierarchy. The world-building fantasy layer on top of that seemed unnecessarily complicated. The best part is the pie, found in the village square, with whole fish peeking out of the crust and a secret inside. But I was disappointed, considering how much others liked it.

This was a very fun read. Greenwing is so lost and confused most of the time, but at heart he's such a nice guy. He gets caught up in some pretty crazy adventures, which were quite entertaining to read.

I liked the world building and the vibes of the book but I did get confused on the plot. Maybe because it took me a long time to finish? Still want to try the next in the series though.
This was somewhere between a 3 and a 4 for me. Overall, a strong and very fun start, but it got a bit muddled towards the end. I felt like it was meant to be a bit convoluted but it ended up taking away some of the fun of the story instead of adding to it, at least for me. Very much looking forward to reading book 2 though!
2024 re-read: knowing more of the story now, the twists and turns of this book make so much more sense! Really enjoyable.

Only marginally less chaotic on reread but Jemis is Jemis from the very start.

This was such a confusing reading experience - I was super invested in the characters pretty much from the beginning, but the plot was strangely convoluted and at places just plain mad. I'm still primarily a character-focused reader so I'm more than happy to continue reading the rest of the series.

This was a fun adventure! I was nervous/skeptical about reading an earlier work by Goddard, because often it feels like the nagging-annoyances in her other works are craft/skill issues that would improve over time, but I actually found this one a little better at earning its emotional payoffs. I like that Goddard is always deeply interested in nurturing interpersonal relationships (reminds me of Courtney Milan that way) and that she uses slightly nonlinear storytelling and sense worldbuilding. I’m also growing increasingly impressed by the variety of characters she can write. I feel very fond of Jemis and eager to read the next one.
