3,5⭐

3 and 1/2 stars for me!

I listened to the audiobook and it's delightful, the narrators do such a wonderful job bringing the characters to life! I absolutely recommend it, especially because the writing style is a bit too much at times and I don't know how much I would have enjoyed it on paper. It's full of catchphrases that are supposed to be somehow poetic, and while it's not necessarily bad, it didn't work very well for me. Besides, sometimes it feels like the characters are trying to explain and justify themselves to the reader, which is a bit weird considering that we are supposed to be listening to their inner monologue.

Having said that, the story is engaging! Rock Paper Scissors is a novel that plays with the fact that you, as a reader, are going to take some things for granted, even when you have absolutely no reason to do so. It starts with something familiar - a couple dealing with a deteriorating marriage, and their last attempt to fix it - and as we follow Adam and Amelia as they realize that their Scottish gateway is not what it seems, we are told about how their marriage came to be through a series of letters that recount a love story, at first, and then how secrets can bring to the crumbling of a marriage. And then there's Bob, the couple's dog, and he's lovely. Amazing presence. And I promise no harm come to him :)

Something I really liked about this book is that I was never sure how things were going to turn out. Both Amelia and Adam have plans they don't disclose at first, the mysterious chapel they end up staying in has ABSOLUTELY something wrong from the start, and then there's the fact that the couple is not as alone as they think, but at first it's hard to figure out if the true danger comes from outside or if Amelia and Adam are actually each other's true enemy.

The ending is most likely not the one I was expecting when I started reading, so kudos to that! I actually liked it, even though there are a couple of things I still have mixed feelings about
Spoilersuch as Adam getting away with everything scot-free, but anyway
.

My final considerations are that Robin did absolutely NOTHING wrong (
Spoilerexcept babying Adam, he doesn't deserve all of that effort, but as long as he makes her happy ...
), Bob deserves the world and I now feel the need to get a giant rabbit as a pet.
