A profound, earth shattering firsthand account of a kidnapping and enslavement of a free black man. A call to all Americans to regard the history of slavery and the continued oppression of black people in our country and society. I hope they require this is high school reading.

This is a really powerful read, full of injustice and sorrow. Telling his story, Northup represents all those slaves that weren’t able to escape the cotton fields, as well as every single slave either born free or born slave.

Some parts of the book were gruesome to the point that you doubt if this people have the slightest drop of humanity in them. An excellent read.

Louis Gossett Jr. is the narrator for this book and he really gives life to the characters in the book. Solomon Northup tells his story in such an even keeled way, considering the great injustices done to him.

Such a moving memoir, the pains and agonies he must have gone though. It’s unimaginable. Beautifully written.
I highly recommend to anyone 5/5

Very emotional and quick read. I couldn’t put it down

Harrowing

Moving, gripping first-person account of slave life in the United States during the 1840's-1850's. Solomon Northup's tale is a terrible and important reminder of man's inhumanity to man. The audio is especially stirring - Louis Gossett Jr. does a profound job with this text.

I really wanted to read this book, but the way it is written made it hard for me to concentrate on it. Sadly, I'm going to just watch the movie, and as an avid reader, I hate myself for that!

Wow this was the first book I have ever read that brought tears to my eyes. This is also my first book about slavery and of a true account of what it is like. I recommend this to anyone wanting to know more about this terrible time in our nations history. Just read this please.

There are so many things to be said about this book....although I dont have the words to say them. Solomon was such an intelligent man and I think in the end that is what saved his life. I cant imagine the hardships he faced as well as others he speaks of. His story is one that will make you think and possibly change your life. You will feel sadness, and anger, and even happiness at some point.
