I feel like I should not say I loved this book given it’s subject matter, but this was absolutely amazing. This should be a must read in schools. Often we want to gloss over the dark parts of our history and pretend like they have no relevance today, and honestly, until we are willing to address the issues of the past, we will never be able to move forward. Absolutely heartbreaking but beautifully written.

Would recommend: Maybe

For the most part, I found this book to pretty dry, which I felt guilty about, of course. I think there's a lot of value in primary accounts, but there's a big gulf between writing style of the 1800s and now. However, there were some really brutal and poignant moments in this account, and I think it was for my good to read it. I also tried to keep a perspective of parallels to modern slavery to remind myself that the days of slavery are not over.

Pretty much the exact same as the film with just a little more info on certain events but strangely less info on important events. For example, I found that the most horrible and shocking scene in the film was when
SpoilerSolomon had to whip Patsey but here in the novel that whole incident is only about a page long and isn't really significant
. I enjoyed this about as much as one can enjoy brutal and harrowing account of a free man being sold into slavery.
