This was a difficult read, both for the topic as well as the period writing. Such a heartbreaking story, but wonderful conclusion. I don't believe I would have had the strength to sit down and remember all of those details after the fact, but that probably helped him cope with what had happened.
A horrifying and deeply engrossing account, Solomon Northup's life story is completely unique from the pool of existing slave narratives. In that regard, it's a must-read.
While the vernacular does not make an easy read for some, the story is thought provoking, gut wrenching, and ultimately heartwarming.
