Orphan X is one of my favorite characters and I loved the AI storyline, but wasn't a fan of Joey's constant whining. She's typically a badass, but in this book she's an insecure cry baby.
Thanks to NetGalley, St.Martins Press and Minotaur Books for the preview copy.
This is yet another addition to a favorite series. One caveat. It seems like Hurwitz is adding more technical descriptions to the weaponry à la Clancy. Totally not necessary, and getting to the annoying point. If I wanted Jack Ryan, I would read those.
Overall, another pageturner; well worth the binge reading time.

Every time I finish a book in the Orphan X series, I think there is no way Gregg Hurwitz can top it. Every time, he proves me wrong!!!
In this latest installment of the Orphan X series, we find Evan Smoak up to his usual shenanigans, with Joey as his sidekick and Tommy and Melinda on the assist.
He’s building relationships with his birth family and continues to find little pieces of his humanity. I love how he consciously makes the choice to embrace it. There are several standout moments in this novel - connecting further with Joey, helping his niece find her lost dog, helping a young girl in need, and even helping his neighbors resolve some of their personal problems.
He becomes a more reliable father figure to Joey, all the while hunting the bad guys. Chuckles definitely ensue in the juxtaposition, as usual, as he and Joey navigate the “real” world.
I do think Jack would be proud of him for the man that he is becoming.
Audible review: I do NOT like this narrator’s reading style. Even the most benign sentences are filled with intense drama. It was extremely distracting. It took me about 1/3 of the book to be able to ignore it. I will read the rest of these books in-hand.

Evan continues being on the run from the government. He is contacted by his recently discovered half-brother's daughter to find her lost dog, Loco. When Even goes to rescue Loco, he stumbles upon a tech executive being killed. The assassin severely injures the man's daughter. Evan discovers who the killer is and tracks her. Evan and the assassin are familiar with one another and their reputations. The book drops the biggest plot twist of the year by revealing Tommy Stojack, Evan's best friend and weapon supplier, supplied the assassin with her weapons.
