omg this was so good. i cried for half of the book AT LEAST. i think JLA did a really good job of representing what it’s like to have SA trauma and anxiety. anyone saying sera was annoying is ignorant to these mental health issues and how they truly go bone deep and are represented in all the choices you make.
my only qualms were that the first 40% was just spent in their bedroom/as a lore dump and that the end didnt include some of their life after kolis was put to rest. it was maybe 5 pages of summary then nothing. they could’ve at least gave me her birthing the boys. i also feel like this and the third book could’ve been condensed and combined if much of the lore dumping and repetitiveness were cut out. anyway, i really love this book, and it’s a bittersweet feeling having the series come to a close. 4.5 stars

Like every other time I read a JLA book, my thoughts and feelings are conflicted. Overall, I enjoyed the story. It’s a great plot, and for the most part it is executed in a way that keeps me coming back for more.

That being said, there is no legitimate reason why this book needed to be 700+ pages. The first 100+ pages is literally dedicated to banter and continuous conversation. There was soooo much unnecessary filler in this book, that on several occasions I found myself hate reading. Not only was the dialogue excessively repetitive, it was also very cringe. Especially some of the exchanges between Nyktos and Sera. Don’t even get me started on the smut. It was sooooo boring, and sooo unnecessary and added nothing to the plot. I get that they have the hots for each other, but does it need to be brought up every 10 pages?!?

If there’s one thing that always falls a little flat for me in these books, it’s the lore. It’s always written in the most confusing and jumbled way, that book after book, makes it increasingly difficult to follow along.
And every book, there’s always a load of new information to pile on top of it. After all this time, I truly don’t even know why Sera and Nyktos couldn’t just kill Kolis. Why is he entombed? Why didn’t Ash absorb Kolis’ court like Sera did to Veses’. Why wouldn’t the power automatically pass to the only other Primal of death? Why is it that Kolis can wield and summon the creatures of death, but it was not he who was called to the Pillars to help the dead cross over. Why did Sera will it so that she would be only known as the nameless consort, when she knows and has accepted that the Primal of Life and Death will rise no matter what they do. What was the point?

I have such a love/hate relationship with this series, that it’s honestly ridiculous.
This series could be so much better with just a few tweaks and a phenomenal editor.

If this book had only been the last 300 pages, I could give it 4.5⭐️ easily, but unfortunately that isn’t the case. I’m hoping that the final installment of the combined series will be better.

That was a SLOG! Really struggled to get through this and keep with the story.
Armentrout made Sera’s anxiety a character in the story who repeated the same lines through...concentrate on my breathing...hold...breath went no where. YAWN it made this such a hard read and it lacked the pace and action the rest of the series has had. I would say 85% of this book is talking over the same thing again and again alongside the character of anxiety. I get what Armentrout is trying to say that anxiety can and is consuming, it robs you of being able to function but it lost it's power with how repetitive she made it.
The last 10% of the book is where all the action happens (maybe a spattering half way). Actually disappointed as I loved Sera and Ash over Poppy and Casteel...let's hope the next book has more pace and action than this one.

I became something I was far better suited for than being a Queen. A fighter. A warrior.

Can I start off by saying I cannot believe we’ve actually reached the end Sera and Ash’s story? It feels like we’ve been in the Shadowlands for so long, and saying goodbye, as excited as I am to get back to Poppy and Cas, is hard. Sera’s journey with anxiety and acceptance in A Light in the Flame will always have a piece of my heart, and seeing her journey continue in this final chapter was heart-warming, how she battled and how everyone around her showed her in their own ways that she wasn’t too much. Anyway, that right there can probably tell you how much of an emotional rollercoaster this book takes us on. There was A LOT of information thrown at us, but there were also so many new puzzle pieces clicking into place throughout, which I loved. And that feeling of being proved wrong when one Is sure they know something is always priceless. But wow, they can’t catch a break, can they? This was like…like watching a baseball team go through its highs and lows because my heart was happy and then smashed in a matter of chapters so many times, but that’s what JLA is the best at, and this was a wonderful and fitting send-off for our primals and gods, and I forewarn you - have your tissues ready!

Very hard to get through this book despite loving the first two and the characters. Just a slog….
After finally finishing this, I was like oh ok that was nice, wrapped up and connected to FBAA nicely, but it was not well executed
