I did not like the way the multiple viewpoint narration was done. Difficult to follow and see what the plot was meant to be

okay this was very fun, if not a little hard to get through (it’s very long)

this book was action packed from start to finish. i loved how complex both fmc’s were, and i’m excited to see how their stories progress. even all of the side characters felt very fleshed out and real, and i wanted to know everything about them.

the plot itself was unique and i’ve not read anything like it before. i found the world building and magic system tough to follow sometimes, but that’s probably just my contemp-romance brain talking.

i’m surprised at how polarising this book apparently is (after looking through some reviews). i enjoyed myself and look forward to reading book two!

Well, lessons were learned. When you receive an ARC in your subscription box that everyone seems hyped about, please Patty do learn, don't wait 6 months before reading it...
This is like the fifth time that I did not want to know anything about the hype and ended up feeling stupid for that.

We read the book throughout 2 perspectives; Rielle who lives in the past and Eliana who lives in the present, roughly a thousand years apart.
Somehow these story lines are connected with each other via a fight/war that doesn't take place in this book but the event as well as the consequences play a big part in both of their lives.

Story: 4/5 , want more!
Characters: 4/5 , There were some I liked more than others, but a good balance overall.
Writing: 4/5 , it was really easy to emerge in the world.
Reread: Yes, definitely. I would love to read all Rielle's chapters in one go and then do the same with Eliana's.

I am really looking forward to the next book in this trilogy, I am ready to dive deeper into this world and it's history.

DID NOT FINISH

Still to finish the book but overall I feel it is...lacking in so many things. I love the idea of two women separated in time and era yet linked by something (still to know exactly what...) but I feel I am reading a book I already read before...the seven trials, the rebellious women, the angel wispering on their minds....I really hate Eliana and her double standards in life (I understand she needs to protects her family but I feel the argument is not enough to betray the rebels, to kill them, to see kids die and still do nothing...)...with so many on my TBR list, I love YA fantasy but this one won't make the cut...sorry but it will be DNFed!

I think this was a good idea but I just didn't enjoy it
adventurous dark fast-paced

There is a lot to unpack with Furyborn, which had some great elements with a lot of potential, but failed to execute them well.

The first five-or-so chapters were phenomenal. They were compelling, gave the reader a lot to look forward to, and succeeded in drawing you to the main characters immediately. However, the same energy was not sustained throughout the novel. The prologue, and the small excerpts at the beginning of the chapters, undermined the tension of the plot as it gave away many of the ‘twists’. The ‘high-stakes’ scenes were also written in a way that was quite confusing and hard to follow, and required lines to be reread multiple times. Rielle and Eliana were flattened to become quite boring characters despite the charisma they both displayed in the opening chapters.

I actually preferred Rielle’s pov to Eliana’s as I found the trials more interesting despite already knowing what the results would be (given that it was in the past), and Eliana’s storyline seemed quite messy to me. Eliana did have the advantage between the two leading characters of being ruthless and selfish, led by her best interests rather than a moral compass.

Although there was meant to be a 1,000 year time difference between the two perspectives, there was no difference in narration style. If there was a scene that was not relevant to the plot and specific characters were not mentioned, I would not have been able to place which timeline it belonged to. The Blood Queen’s Fall and rise of the Undying Emperior should have had significant repercussions in the lifestyles of the characters, however, and created different priorities, attitudes, and atmospheres, but this was not reflected in the perspectives.

The supporting characters were also quite two-dimensional, so the entire cast of characters were very hard to connect to. It also hindered the romance aspect of the book, which seems to be a significant portion, but seemed to be something that we were told about rather than shown. There are some positive portrayals of sex and use of contraceptives, but the sex scenes are very reminiscent of sjm and similarly are literally earth-shaking. I have seen the book advertised as a “bi fantasy” as the two main characters, while both having male love interests, mention previous female sex partners in a single line. While the main characters are bisexual, readers should not be inclined to read the book for bi representation as it is very easy to miss.

Many questions were left unanswered, so perhaps the next book is stronger in the plot development, and it does seem that the characters have been left at turning points, but this book seemed unnecessarily long and empty.
