Ok, so this was good. It was slow for about ten chapters in the beginning and I had some trouble relating to the characters, but the plot is amazing! Like I said, it was slow in the beginning, then it got better, then it got slow again at some point again. But those last few chapters, man. So good. And the plot twists (?) near the end made my head feel "!!!!"
As for the characters, I liked the fact that both protagonists were so complex and morally grey. I was a little confused with Eliana at some point because one moment she was so morally grey it's nearly black, the next she sympathized with her victims, then she's like "no I'm not, I'm evil !!" then she justifies it by saying that she's only doing it to survive. Like ??? Where do you fall on the morality spectrum? I guess that's what makes her a realistic character, so props to Claire Legrand for that. I mean like, as a reader, it was a little confusing as to how I'd perceive her.
I'd say my favorite characters overall are Ludivine and Zahra. Even though their personalities aren't exactly unpacked enough in this first book, I feel like I'm always a sucker for the "witty side-kick" trope every time.
I loved the new/unique perception of Angels in here. I didn't really like the overall grim/dark vibe of this book, but that's just my preference. I know lots of people who prefer books like this over the more... light vibe ? (idrk how to describe it)
Overall, I liked this book and I do plan on continuing with the series eventually :)

This is an exciting adventure that follows two young women who live very different lives 1000 years apart from each other. Rielle and Eliana are both so interesting and compelling; protagonists whom you can't help but root for, in spite of flaws or tendencies that err on the side of, well... NOT ideal. Switching back and forth between their perspectives was a little obnoxious for me, but I think that's just something I personally struggle with in books and eventually (hopefully) I will get over it. Half the excitement of reading Furyborn is finding out what on earth the connection is between them, and now that we know I am very eager to read Kingsbane, which I am currently on a waiting list for. Also, Simon. Simon forever, more stories about Simon, PLEASE, Legrand, don't you dare hurt Simon.

Maybe I'm reading too much fantasy, but this felt derivative. It was a fun read, exciting, and decently written. I just reminded me of several other fantasy books.
9/19 reread: I loved Furyborn just as much the second time around! I definitely caught on to more details since I knew where the first book ends, as well as just being able to absorb more with a reread. I'm excited to continue on to Kingsbane!
Furyborn is a fantastic start to the fantasy trilogy Empirium. I loved that the book tells us two interconnected stories of Rielle and Eliana, who live one thousand years apart. One of my favorite TV shows is Arrow, and I was happy to see Furyborn use a similar framework for telling the stories that are connected yet separated by time. The worldbuilding is intricate, and the plots are fast-paced and engaging. I listened to the audiobook, and the narrator did a wonderful job as well. I'm going to wait to continue with Kingsbane until closer to Furyborn 3's release. I am so excited to see what happens in the rest of the series!

The stories in this book take place thousands of years apart, so it's important to keep track of whose story you are reading. Unfortunately, I didn't find this story to be a compelling read. I was very lost at the beginning of the story; later world-building filled in some of my gaps, but not enough for me to stay invested. The story itself can be very confusing at times, particularly with the use of the term "angel" for the supernatural god/king/being that appears near the beginning.
There is a reader for this book, but it isn't me, and it isn't my patrons, either.

I should have written the review when I read the book like 2 months ago but I have been doing a bad job at this review thingy lately.
I don't entirely remember everything about the book because I have read quite enough of books since I read this one but I do remember how I felt when I started shipping Eliana with Simon although some parts felt a bit too "wait what the fuck? When did this happen?" But like is it truly an otp if they don't try to murder each other quite few times?
I loved the idea of the story and how it connected with both two girls apart centuries. Loved the concept of Sun Queen and Blood Queen. Really loved Rielle's character and Audric too. Like sure it had it's YA cliche and tropes but truly all YA books still has them. I won't say it's a bad thing because I clearly found myself being a complete trash for this book. It hooked me from the very first pages and it didn't let go until it ended.
It's safe to say I want to read the sequel very bad. My Queen Rielle needs me!! Or I need her but Eliana can come too.
