I enjoyed the series of stories- that the stories are short enough to tempt reluctant readers but long enough that you can invest in the characters.
3.5 Stars!
This was a great way to discuss important topics. It was short and a good book to read “one chapter a day”. I think I will use excerpts from it as mentor text-but I may not use the entire book for class only because some metaphors/ways things are discussed are a little ahead for my 6th graders.
Love Jason Reynolds and will continue to read his work!!

2.5 rounded up to 3. It's fine.
Not typically my type of book but it was recommended to me and was an easy read. A few of the stories were interesting enough but overall too juvenile for me.

I love this book! The structure was captivating. I loved hearing the different perspectives, and I would love to incorporate this book in the middle school drama classroom. This material is prime for drama activities/stories alive programming.
The stories in this novel are only loosely connected to each other, so it almost reads like a short story collection. Each one was moving and impactful in its own way. This was a really quick and enjoyable read!
Not sure how to rate this one. I appreciate the opportunity to hear voices from a different culture than mine. I enjoy short stories/vignettes, to a point. I liked the “moment in time from different perspectives” angle, but I also wished it all connected more.
NB: one whole chapter devoted to the aftermath of middle school boys kissing on the cheek.

What a clever way to write a book! I really enjoyed the chapters telling the story of one/two kids or a whole group as they walk home from school. However, I was expecting it to actually tell the story of a school bus falling from the sky. Apparently I thought this was going to be science fiction or something. Instead, each chapter uses the phrase "a school bus falling from the sky" in one way or another.
I enjoyed how the stories and characters overlapped and it was great to read about a diverse community. Bravo, Jason Reynolds! I see why it won awards!
