Wow. Mind blown. What begins as a saucy demystification of the life of a courtesan becomes a nightmare demolition of sophistication, class and morality. I marvel at Zola's ability to create a heroine who you don't necessarily like but you keep following out of morbid curiosity and utter fascination. You want her to get out her terrible situations and you want her to come crashing down when she's in cruel triumph. Also Zola's ability to paint massive group scenes (the theater, the races, engagement parties etc.) and navigate the reader through them while maintaining a cast of thousands is unparalleled. The roller coaster story is told without an abundance of commentary or nostalgia which makes it all the more gripping and relatable. Absolutely loved it.

this took me FOREVER. I feel like I’ve been reading this for months. nonetheless, there are gorgeous descriptions of wealth and luxury and I think that if the pacing were better this would have been a higher rated book, for me. the social commentary is very interesting and there’s much good to be said about this book
