i don't know how to rate each book as i read them on their own. the whole series is an A++ though

I really enjoyed Hollow City, not as much as the first book but I still really liked it and that ending was crazy good!

I love the premise of this book and the wierd and kind of creepy photos. The story and characters were original. The protagonist was wishy-washy, always having these wierd moments of introspection that felt like they were just stuck in periodically. “Excuse me whileI have a strange interlude.”

This book was better than the first, since it wasn't set on a single island and the characters travelled and met other peculiars (hooray!). This book was definitely more entertaining and fun to read, the events that happened didn't take too long, so they didn't have time to be boring. Even the characters seemed to gain different peronalities, which is always fun. Emma got an important role of the fierce leader, Olive, while a scared child, was plenty helpful, Enoch was a grump that pissed everyone off (but at least his comments were funny), Horace was posh, but had funny interactions, Browyn stayed her protective self, Hugh was a great help and Jacob... had no actual development. Like, I love the fact that the children gained personalities, but I didn't like that the MAIN CHARACTER had esentialy nothing personality wise. The only thing that seemed to be growing is his powers. So, plot wise this book didn't really get that big of an improvement but it was ceartainly way more entertaining, character wise some gained personalites (the children) and some just didn't change at all (Jacob).

This was a big step down from the first book to me. I felt like not very much happened, though it took a whole book to get it across. Many of the characters or interactions irritated me because I didn't feel that they were authentic - this then pulled me out of the story a little. I also felt like, up until the last 5% of the book, it dragged. Again - I didn't feel like much happened. The ending had some interesting twists, but that was it. It often felt like the text was straining itself to match up with the photographs, even when they felt quite different from what was being described (might have annoyed me because they actually had a purpose in the first book - they were real pictures that Yakob had found. But here they are used to visualise things that the children absolutely could not have taken photographs of, and so it just doesn't feel realistic).

Not sure why this one irritated me in these ways, when I really liked the first one. The next ones will probably be better!

DNF at 35%.

I could live with the shallow excuses for characters and the poor writing, but I just couldn't stomach the blatant xenophobia that Riggs is exposing the Romani travelers to. FU, Ransom Riggs. FU.

I like the adventure, but it’s a bit immature. I think the first book was better
