Wonderful! Masterful! Creative! and a pleasure to read is how I'd describe this book by Colum McCann. It's set round the 1974 performance of Philippe Petit who tight-roped between the Twin Towers. This public event is the backdrop for no fewer than eleven characters whose lives intertwine through-out the tale. There is a Catholic priest and his brother, a Guatemalan refugee, a prostitute and her mother, a judge and his wife, a bereaving mother, a hippy, and two more who escape me at the moment. McCann speaks with a distinct voice through each character's chapter, but manages to intertwine their lives in such a way that I was thrilled to discover the forgotten characters when they reappeared. Loved this book!

Such a beautiful book and an exploration of so many different people. I loved it and would recommend!

Initially I did not love it, I was intrigued by the story, but I grew to love it. As I met new characters and saw different sides of the already familiar ones I fell more in love with it. Ostensibly, its about people witnessing a bizarre occurrence, but that's really not at all what its about. The best part is the last 100 pages I think.

WOW. I can't even put my thoughts into words...

This novel is truly beautiful, tragic, and heart-wrenching. I don't remember the last time I was so emotionally moved by a novel. The stories are complex and keeping track of the narrator is sometimes difficult, but it all comes together into one touching novel.

Go read it right now!

It took me a while, but I really did enjoy this book. I thought at time, his attention to detail was a bit extreme and I had a hard time staying focused. But as the story went on and the connections between the stories started coming together, I really just fell in love! I think it was very cool that I finished reading this story on 9/11... I really miss the Towers and this book made me so MUCH want to see them again!

Magnificent!

LOVED it. It was a little slow to get into at first because there are so many characters and the point of view keeps changing, but I love books that are written with multiple narrators and I love books where the characters' lives all end up intersecting. I especially loved the end - it was the perfect way to wrap up the story.

For some reason, the description of this book really turned me off & didn't interest me at all. But someone suggested it for book club and the majority of the group concurred, so I dove in. I'm glad I did! I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I loved the interconnected stories and the differing narratives all providing different views of the same events in the same city. I was most impressed with how well McCann was able to capture the voice of each of the different characters be it a hooker from the Bronx or a Park Ave housewife.
