"Let the great New York City spin" might be a more apt title, considering the how the author spins the fictional tales of New Yorkers from different walks of life centered around a real life event from 1974. It's fun to have a sudden realization during the read of a POV chapter about how that character is connected with another that came before it and their perspective on the same matter. The prose is very descriptive, with a range of small events creating a scene in one's mind. Some sentences and passages give you a warm feeling, especially the description of the city if you've been there.
Book Club 3.0: Book #6
Very will written. I have a soft spot for grand stories that spiderweb together in the form of several smaller stories, so this was right up my alley. I love the idea of unity in seeing a fictional account of the effects a real life event could theoretically have in tying dozens of people together unexpectedly. Not perfect, but I'd gladly recommend it for a read.
My only regret is it ended up taking us over seven months to read because wedding planning is a busy pastime. I'll need to read it again someday because I'm positive there are plenty of details I missed as a result.

This book captured my attention right away because I recently saw a documentary about the man who walked a tightrope between the World Trade Centers in 1974. The story builds quietly, weaving characters into a larger tapestry. You may not like all of the characters or be able to relate to them but the author allows you to *see* them with a great deal of clarity and no judgment. I found the impact of this book to be very subtle... but it is one that will stay with me.
So wonderful. In 1974 a man walks between the twin towers of the World Trade Centre in New York. This event ripples out through many lives: an Irish priest falling in love for the first time, a woman whose only son has died in Vietnam, an arrested hooker, the woman who raises the hooker's grandchildren, and more. Each of them individual, each of them with their own voice and story, sometimes crossing over or else missing each other by minutes or years. And the writing? That's beautiful. I'm definitely going to search out more McCann.
Highly recommended.
Highly recommended.
A very good collection of stories, loosely connected by Philippe Petit's high-wire walk across the Twin Towers in 1974.
I was 9 years old when Mr. Petit had his infamous walk between the Twin Towers, I remember it vaguely. This book was very interesting and reminded me yet again that we are all connected. In life, in love, in good times and bad, through great sadnesses and greater joys. I wish that we as the human animals could remember that or keep in more to the front of our mind on a more regular basis.
All of the characters were well fleshed out and, their motivations understandable, I especially liked the last section, where everything came full circle and even though many characters were not throughout the whole book those who stood at the end knew who they were and where they came from. I highly recommend this book and will most assuredly be reading more from Mr. McCann.
