Thanks to St. Martin's Griffin for the copy of this book!
I loved Katy Birchall's last two books and was very excited to read this book based on "The Hating Game" x "Beach Read" vibes... but I think that what I didn't have in mind and what I forgot to adjust my expectations to is that Katy Birchall writes contemporary fiction with a side of romance, meaning there's not going to be as much interaction with the couple and as much tension and love in her books. That being said, I think the comparisons put in the description hurt my experience of this book, because I was bored and wanting more from the characters together.

Another great book from Katy Birchall. This one doesn’t have a wedding setting. Instead, our narrator Harper is the celebrity editor at a print magazine who is known for her empathetic and insightful interviews. Unfortunately Harper’s boss, Cosmo, fails to see the value in her work. When Cosmo hires Ryan to be the new features editor and begins assigning Harper’s stories to Ryan, she is dismayed. Especially since Harper and Ryan knew each other a decade ago, and she cannot stand him. This is a second chance romance with enemies to lovers trope. The comparison to the Hating Game is accurate although I liked this book more. If you enjoy contemporary romantic fiction this is a great pick. I would also recommend Birchall’s earlier book The Wedding Season.
Thank you Katy Birchall and St. Martin’s Griffin Publishing for the advanced reader copy of The Last Word.
This was a lovely read and I am rating this a 3.75 stars! This story follows our FMC Harper while she exceptionally soars within her position at the Narrative as the celebrity editor, while combating her Editor in Chief Cosmo for the importance of her role.
Enter Ryan, a previous co-worker with whom she has a tumultuous past, coming in to shake up her world, yet again. Is he going to push her for the better or for the worse?
This is a take on an enemy to lovers, workplace romance with some forces proximity. There are quite a few gripes thrown into this novel, with each one being pretty successful. The banter between our two main characters was very well written.
Overall, I found this story to be cute with some fun side characters.

This book is an absolute blast! It's the kind of book that grabs hold of you and doesn't let go until you've devoured every single page. Seriously, I couldn't put it down. I was hooked from the very beginning, and there were moments when I couldn't help but burst out laughing like a maniac. I mean, who knew a book could be this hilarious?
Now, I have to admit, the plot was somewhat predictable, but you know what? That didn't take away from the sheer enjoyment of the ride. It was like being on a roller coaster, where you know what twists and turns are coming, but you still find yourself screaming and laughing with delight. And let me tell you, this book had me grinning like a Cheshire cat the whole way through.
One of the things that I absolutely adored about this book was the friend group. They were like a family, always there for each other through thick and thin. It warmed my heart to see how they supported one another not only in their work lives but also in their personal lives. It reminded me of my own tribe of friends, and it made me appreciate them even more.
Now, I have to be honest here. There were moments when I found Harper a tad bit childish. But you know what? It didn't bother me all that much because I understood where she was coming from. Her complicated relationship with her parents had a profound impact on her, and it was fascinating to see how that played out in her life. It added depth to her character and made her journey all the more relatable.
Oh, and let's not forget about the chemistry between Harper and Ryan. Their witty banter had me grinning like a fool. The tension between them was electric, and I found myself rooting for them from the very beginning. If you're a fan of office romances and the whole enemies-to-lovers trope, then this book is an absolute treat for you. And hey, the spicy scenes aren't too heavy, so it's the perfect balance of sizzle and sweetness.
To sum it all up, this book is a delightful romp that left me wanting more. The author has a knack for storytelling that had me completely captivated. I'm already on the hunt for more books by this talented writer because if they can deliver this level of fun and entertainment, then I'm in for a wild ride. Trust me, this book gets my stamp of approval with a resounding 100% recommendation.

Harper is a celebrity editor for a magazine who is known for getting even the most private stars to open up in interviews. She is shocked to meet the magazine’s new features editor, someone she has to work with very closely, is actually someone she knows. Ryan is the man she interned with years ago, the man who not only broke her heart, but also betrayed her. Now they are working together again and those feelings start to come back.
I really enjoyed this fun rom com set in the chaotic world of journalism. I loved that Harper was killing it at her job and approached celebrity interviews with so much compassion. She was incredible at her job and I loved seeing her shine from the beginning. I appreciated the little glimpses into their past that really showed the miscommunication that caused their relationship to fall apart. It made me appreciate Ryan and want them to work things out. This book was another win from Katy Birchall.
I thought Karen Cass was a great narrator and really captured Harper’s spunk through her narration.
Thank you to St. Martin’s Press, Macmillan Audio, and NetGalley for the advance copies.

Fans of The Hating Game by Sally Thorne won't be able to get enough of this second chance romance meets enemy journalists to lovers story weaved wonderfully by Katy Birchall.
Grumpy x sunshine, second chance romance, workplace enemies to lovers, dual timelines, he fell first, pining, and oh my god the banter was incredible. This book had all the tropes to keep me completely hooked into the story.
This story also dealt with feelings of inadequacy, difficult relationships with family, and fierce female friendships. I laughed, I cried, I went through the full range of emotions. Harper & Ryan both showed me how hard it can be to articulate your feelings, and how sometimes it can take something truly awful like losing your job to really re-evaluate yourself and become the best version of you.
Big thanks go out to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for giving me the opportunity to read this lovely book in exchange for an honest review.

Here is your reminder that speaking up and distancing yourself from toxic family members is ok! I was so angry every time her parents popped up on page. Ryan was so sweet and I loved the backstory of their earlier years. You could feel the spark right away between Ryan and Harper. Mimi was a great wing woman lol. There were a few laugh out loud moments and aww moments throughout.
