First, there is not a single minute where they seem to be true enemies. They annoy each other, play games like The Staring Game and other elementary school variations on flirting. They may both be guarded and competitive, but not enemies. Their early interactions walk the line of flirting and annoyance, and the backdrop of the office and co-workers make it work.
There are so many red flags -- like him admitting women have used him for his body, then her bringing up his looks repeatedly. While some of these are marginally addressed, it is hard to believe Lucy is in love when she spends most of the book trying to learn about him. It just feels fake and unreal.
On top of all this, there is no plot climax, just a series of emotional speed bumps. The entire narrative spins around the promotion they are fighting for, but that is resolved in a few sentences at the very end of the book.
The steamy scenes were excellent, but not enough to distract me from the narrative train wreck. Everything else worth reading was skipped over in the epilogue.

Lucy’s bubbly personality whilst being juxtaposed with Josh’s detachment and seriousness is perfect. Their hatred runs deep, their games with each other have increasingly higher stakes - yet hate is just a flip of a coin away from love.
The Hating Game was not a 5 star read for me as I found it too fast-paced, I tend to prefer medium-paced books and spend longer with the characters. I really wanted to see more of Josh and Lucy as

The author's writing is amazing, and I can't wait to read more of her books. I really was rooting for them protecting each other and I loved how much of a slow burn it was. I read it in one sitting, it was so entertaining!
I gave 4 stars because while I really loved this romance as a fiction book, Josh's behavior towards Lucy would not fly in real life. (atleast I sure as hell hope it wouldn't just be labeled as 'boys will be boys') It's juvenile to be cruel to the person you like. It left a bad taste in my mouth since the vitriol wasn't necessarily needed the way it was executed. She was treated like shit and we're supposed to just forgive him and have it glossed over without any genuine apology.
This feels more like a bully romance than an enemies to lovers.
