Based on how how I usually like my books more character-heavy, you'd think I wouldn't have enjoyed this one as much as I did. However, since there's also a good amount of simplified science, I ate this one up with the same enthusiasm I did Project Hail Mary a year ago. My biggest grievance with the story was the undeserved demise of Ian Malcolm and all the raptors that just wanted to have a good time and make some raptor babies.

This was one of the first audiobooks I listened to, and I remember how much my mind was blown by how different it is from the movie. The main theme is there, but damn near everything that happens is so different lol.
I will say the beginning is a bit slow, just with all the science and be build up to their arrival at the park. But it packs so much more of a punch in terms of the ethical discussion that's at the core of this book. Sometimes it feels a little much, mostly with Malcolm while he's mortally wounded lol, but it's so interesting to think about, and I ultimately appreciate having more opportunities to do so. There's not a ton of character development really imo, it's much more about the plot, the action, and the deeper meaning behind those things. I also loved how much more the book gets into animal behavior and trying to predict that than the movie does. I find that stuff endlessly fascinating.
This book is also one of the only thrillers I've read. It really keeps you on the edge of your seat, there are so many moments in which you are honestly shocked whenever someone doesn't die lol.

A lot of people get killed by dinosaurs in this book. Some of it is very VERY graphic, even described via POV at one point. Seriously, the book is quite a bit gorier than the movie. There's also several depictions of medical treatment as a result of the aformentioned dinosaur violence, and some of that is pretty unpleasant too. If you're going into this book expecting a play by play of the movie, you're in for quite a surprise. Maybe that's why this book was a bit of a tough read for me since I knew it was different from the film but...wow. The fact just about everybody dies before they explode the island- I'll be honest, I was not expecting that whatsoever Overall, it was a good read. Incredibly tense and had me on the edge of my seat multiple times. I'll be honest though, I 100% could have done without Lex's character in this book. Crichton really captured the spirit of an annoying child because I was ready to strangle her at so many points. Aside from that, solid sci-fi read!
